State Secretary Pascale Baeriswyl to coordinate negotiations with EU starting 1 April 2017

Pascale Baeriswyl will take over the coordination of Switzerland’s negotiations with the European Union (EU) from Jacques de Watteville. During its session on Wednesday 22 February 2017, the Federal Council tasked the State Secretary of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) with pursuing the coordination of the discussions with the EU, together with the negotiators in charge of different dossiers, as of 1 April.


Federal Council wants to swiftly draw up a new tax proposal

During its meeting on 22 February 2017, the Federal Council instructed the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) to draw up the substantive parameters for a new tax proposal by mid-2017 at the latest following the vote on corporate tax reforms. The objective remains that of strengthening Switzerland's competitiveness.


Selenium deficiency promoted by climate change

As a result of climate change, concentrations of the trace element selenium in soils are likely to decrease. Because the selenium content of crops may also be reduced, the risk of selenium deficiency could be increased in many regions of the world. This was shown by a recent study which used data-mining to model the global distribution of selenium.


Flight tests at Älggialp: Flying in poor visibility

From 20 to 24 February 2017, the armed forces will carry out test flights in poor visibility at Älggialp (Canton of Obwalden). The goal of these field tests with helicopters is to evaluate systems that allow flying in poor visibility caused by snow. Civilian and military representatives from other countries are also involved in the tests.

Humans influence evolution. In the case of whitefish in Swiss lakes, one consequence of this is replacement of a diversity of specialised species by fewer generalists. A recent analysis now suggests that communities of diverse specialists utilise trophic resources more efficiently.



Explosion in species diversity due to hybridization

No less than 500 new species of cichlids, brightly coloured perch-like fish, evolved in Lake Victoria (East Africa) over the past 15,000 years – a record in the animal and plant world. This evolutionary puzzle has now been solved by scientists from Eawag and Bern University. In a study published in Nature Communications, they demonstrate for the first time that this rapid evolution was facilitated by earlier hybridization between two distantly related cichlid species from the Upper Nile and Congo drainage systems.

Registrierte Arbeitslosigkeit im Januar 2017 - Gemäss den Erhebungen des Staatssekretariats für Wirtschaft (SECO) waren Ende Januar 2017 164’466 Arbeitslose bei den Regionalen Arbeitsvermittlungszentren (RAV) eingeschrieben, 5’094 mehr als im Vormonat. Die Arbeitslosenquote stieg damit von 3,5% im Dezember 2016 auf 3,7% im Berichtsmonat. Gegenüber dem Vorjahresmonat erhöhte sich die Arbeitslosigkeit um 822 Personen (+0,5%).


Swiss-Austrian exchange of views and information on higher education, research and innovation

On 8 February, the second bilateral exchange of views and information took place between the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW). State Secretary Mauro Dell’Ambrogio led the Swiss delegation for the talks on developments and cooperation in higher education, research and innovation at the BMWFW. At the invitation of Reinhold Mitterlehner, vice chancellor and minister for science, research and economy, the meeting was followed by a working lunch.

The State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, Mauro Dell’Ambrogio, is on an official visit to Belgrade at the invitation of Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić. Together with the prime minister, the state secretary will officially launch the ‘From Education to Employment’ project, led by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The state secretary will also give a talk at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and at the University of Belgrade.


Publication of SIF report on international financial and tax matters 2017

In the future, national leeway should be explored even more consistently and the parameters within which the Swiss financial centre operates designed in a forward-looking and efficient way. The current report on international financial and tax matters provides information on activities in the areas of financial market regulation, engagement in international financial bodies and international tax policy in 2016, and gives an outlook on upcoming challenges.


Initiation of consultation on introduction of AEOI with additional countries

On 2 February 2017, the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) initiated the consultation on introducing the automatic exchange of information (AEOI) in tax matters with additional countries. The implementation of the AEOI is planned for 1 January 2018 so that the first exchange of information will take place in 2019. The consultation will last until 13 April 2017.
