NEST receives SIA Umsicht award

On 22 March 2017 the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) awarded NEST a prize as part of its "Umsicht – Regards – Sguardi 2017" awards. The modular research and innovation building created by Empa and Eawag was acknowledged as providing a major contribution to the future design of Switzerland's living space.

In particular, the refrigeration inside the cargo containers is not always guaranteed and existing methods for measuring the temperature are not sufficiently reliable. A sensor developed at Empa solves this problem. It looks like a piece of fruit and acts like a piece of fruit – but is actually a spy.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer at G20 finance minister meeting in Baden-Baden

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will take part in the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors under the German G20 presidency in Baden-Baden on 17 and 18 March 2017. Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan will accompany him. The topics to be discussed at the meeting include in particular the global economic situation, fiscal and monetary policy, budgetary policy, structural reforms, the free movement of capital, and tax and financial market regulation agendas. The Head of the Federal Department of Finance will also conduct bilateral talks on the fringes of the meeting.

Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann meets with Minister Barañao of Argentina

Lino Barañao, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovative Production in the Argentinian government, paid Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann a courtesy visit on 16 March 2017. The discussion with the head of the EAER and talks at a previous working session with the state secretary of Education, Research and Innovation Mauro Dell’Ambrogio, focussed on scientific cooperation between the two countries, which is based on a joint statement signed in 2015.

9 professors appointed at ETH Zurich and EPFL

In response to the proposals received from the President of ETH Zurich, Professor Lino Guzzella, and the President of EPFL, Professor Martin Vetterli, the ETH Board resolved at its meeting of 8/9 March 2017 to appoint a total of 9 professors and award the title of professor to 5 individuals; it also acknowledged the resignation of 7 professors and thanked them for their services.

Reinforcing research for a Swiss Industry 4.0

In its strategy for 2017–2020, the ETH Board champions future-oriented fields of research. Digitalisation, in particular, is confronting industry with great challenges. Through close cooperation with companies, the ETH Domain makes an important contribution towards the development of Industry 4.0 in Switzerland. Strategic focus areas include “Advanced Manufacturing”, “Data Science”, “Energy” and “Personalised Health”. In view of the inflation adjustment and the cost-cutting programmes announced by the Federal Council, too, it is of concern to the ETH Board to emphasise that investments in the ETH Domain generate significant value creation in the Swiss economy.

Registrierte Arbeitslosigkeit im Februar 2017 - Gemäss den Erhebungen des Staatssekretariats für Wirtschaft (SECO) waren Ende Februar 2017 159’809 Arbeitslose bei den Regionalen Arbeitsvermittlungszentren (RAV) eingeschrieben, 4’657 weniger als im Vormonat. Die Arbeitslosenquote sank damit von 3,7% im Januar 2017 auf 3,6% im Berichtsmonat. Gegenüber dem Vorjahresmonat verringerte sich die Arbeitslosigkeit um 1’608 Personen (-1,0%).

X-ray pulses make atomic oscillations visible

Researchers from the Max Born Institute in Berlin, Empa and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have, for the first time, been able to observe minute, ultrafast atomic oscillations in a crystal lattice with the help of a new experimental technique. These oscillations, which are triggered by light pulses, are based on a physical effect – Raman scattering – which was postulated about 100 years ago.

During its meeting on 3 March 2017, the Federal Council was informed about the relevant national and international developments in the area of environmental sustainability in financial market policy and the Confederation's commitment.
