Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Braque, Picasso and many more: the exhibition “Impressionist Masterpieces from the E.G. Bührle Collection, Zurich (Switzerland)” is promised to attract many art lovers at the National Art Center in Tokyo. The show opened to the public on February 14th. Held one day before, on February 13th, the official opening ceremony featured speeches by the Director General of the National Art Center, Mr. Tamotsu Aoki, the President of the Chunichi Shimbun, Mr. Uichiro Oshima, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan, Mr. Jean-François Paroz, and the President of the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection, Dr. Christian Bührle. Many of the exhibition’s 64 pieces are on display in Japan for the first time.

A successful industrialist whose business comprised defense equipment, Emil Georg Bührle constituted one of the world’s most impressive art collection between 1936 and 1959. After his death, an important part of the collection was transferred to the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection, in Zurich. These works are planned to be integrated into a new annex of the Kunsthaus Zurich in 2020. This exhibition in Japan, therefore, is probably the last opportunity to see many of the collection’s masterpieces outside of Switzerland. After Tokyo, where the show will last until May 7th, the Kyushu National Museum (May 19 to July 16) and the Nagoya City Art Museum (July 28 to September 24) will welcome the exhibition.
