On Tuesday November 9, 2021, Ambassador Dr. Andreas Baum visited Fukushima, where he had the pleasure to greet Fukushima Prefectural Governor, Mr. Masao Uchibori, and Fukushima City Mayor, Mr. Hiroshi Kohata. All parties expressed their appreciation of the ongoing collaborations and excellent relations between Switzerland and the Fukushima region.

In particular, Ambassador Baum thanked Governor Uchibori and Mayor Kohata for welcoming Swiss athletes of the para-badminton team in the context of the Host Town initiative for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. All shared their enthusiasm around the Support our Kids project, through which students from the Fukushima and Tohoku region have been given the opportunity to travel to Switzerland for homestay programs. Ambassador Baum, Governor Uchibori and Mayor Kohata reaffirmed their commitment to further developing collaborations and exchanges in a variety of sectors, including energy, innovation and sustainability.

In the afternoon Ambassador Baum had the opportunity to tour Fukushima’s Robot Test field in company of the Vice General Manager of Fukushima Innovation Coast Promotion Organization Planning Strategy Office, Mr. Yusuke Kimura, before being shown around the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum by Mr. Takashi Kobayashi, vice-curator of the museum.

Switzerland shares deep ties with the Tohoku region and the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan has developed a range of exchange programs and projects to help dynamize the region, such as the Support our Kids project. As a Host Town of Switzerland for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Fukushima City has also done us the honour of organizing many Swiss-related events, from concerts to cultural exchanges and school visits. We would like to thank the authorities of Fukushima for their warm welcome and look forward to an ongoing fruitful collaboration.
