The Mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, and the Mayor of Berne, Alexander Tschäppät, visited the Public Transportation Company (GSP) “Belgrade” on February 12th, 2016, and participated in the promo ride with one of the donated Swiss trams from GSP’s Depot to Belgrade Cooperative building.

Mayors of the two capitals visited the GSP’s forge founded in the beginning of 20th century, as well as one of the trams, donation of the Swiss Government, which has recently arrived to Belgrade. The Mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, has highlighted that he is delighted with the visit of the Swiss colleague and stated that GSP “Belgrade” is the biggest public company in the City and that the Swiss donation represents a meaningful gift for the City of Belgrade.

  • An additional 14 trams have already arrived from Basel to Belgrade. During next few days we are expecting arrival of an additional 15 trams, total of 29 vehicles. These trams will be on the streets of Belgrade in several days and will contribute to a better frequency of the public transport and will enhance the quality of the City’s transport. This is one of the examples of the good cooperation between Switzerland, Serbia and Belgrade and we hope that, with this signed cooperation agreement and friendship between Belgrade and Berne, we will find new ways to cooperate and create better quality of life in our two cities. In that sense, Belgrade has what to offer to Berne – stated Sinisa Mali, expressing gratitude to the Ambassador of Switzerland as well.

Alexander Tschäppät, Mayor of Berne, has pointed out that Switzerland is famous by chocolate, watches and public transport.

  • Public transport is very important if you want to have a successful city, and Swiss cities are well covered by trams, buses and trains. Trams are much cheaper and more successful way of transportation and I believe that by relying on them you will have simpler and better public transport – stated Mayor Tschäppät, highlighting how satisfied he is with a good cooperation with Belgrade.

    Zeljko Milkovic, General Director of GSP “Belgrade”, Jean Daniel Ruch, Ambassador of Switzerland have also participated in the visit to the biggest public transportation company in the Balkans.

Since 2001, a total of 50 tramcars and 38 trams have been shipped from Basel to Belgrade. Another 15 trams and 10 tramcars are foreseen to arrive in 2016. As a result of 15 years of cooperation, the Swiss trams will make up 30% of all GSP’s railway vehicles (a total of 113 vehicles).
