
Close of the project “Poverty Alleviation through Livestock Development in the Northern Uplands of Vietnam” (PALD)

The project “Poverty Alleviation through Livestock Development in the Northern Uplands of Vietnam” (PALD) has gone through three phases (2006-2015) with a total budget of 3 million Euros funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Vietnam. The project was managed by the National Institute of Animal Sciences (NIAS) and implemented by Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontiers (AVSF). Essential partners were provincial DARDS, communes and district authorities and agencies, especially the Women’s Union. The project closing workshop was organized in Hanoi on 28 October 2015 and hosted by the NIAS. Representatives from farmer household beneficiaries, commune, district, provincial and national government partners as well as project owner and implementation team participated.


During the event, farmers from Thai, H’mong ethnics shared their stories on how they got out of poverty thanks to the technical support from the project. Mr. Doan Van Thuy, Vice chairman of Van Yen District People’s Committee confirmed the approaches applied by PALD are very suitable and sustainable. He said “The PALD project provided technical support, mobilizing local resources. We have our system, we have our people, and our farmers work and invest money. Therefore after the project, approaches and lessons learnt will be applied in the district by our people. This is the success of the PALD project.”
After 10 years of support, more than 12’000 households in 121 communes, in 9 districts and 3 provinces of Phu Tho, Son La and Yen Bai have improved their livelihood, through improving food security, food nutrition and also income increase.
