Minen und andere explosive Kriegsrückstände sind ein gefährliches Erbe des Kroatienkriegs von 1991-1996 und beeinträchtigen die Sicherheit der lokalen Bevölkerung. Die wirtschaftliche und soziale Integration von Minenopfern ist eine Herausforderung für die Gesellschaft. Die Schweiz unterstützt im Rahmen des Schweizer Erweiterungsbeitrags mit 3 Millionen CHF Massnahmen zur Beseitigung von Minen und zur Besserstellung von Minenopfern sowie deren Familien. Die Lebensqualität der Bevölkerung in den von Minen kontaminierten Gebieten wird somit verbessert.

Innovationen sind ein bedeutender Faktor für Wirtschaftsentwicklung und spielen für ein Land mit hoher Arbeitslosigkeit eine bedeutende Rolle. Kroatien liegt im Vergleich zu anderen EU-Mitgliedstaaten hinsichtlich Investitionen in neue Technologien über dem Durchschnitt. Forschung und Innovation in Mittel- und Kleinbetrieben sind weiterhin auf Leistungsanreize angewiesen, um ihr volles Potential auszuschöpfen. Daher unterstützt die Schweiz mit einem Beitrag von 1 Million CHF Franken das kroatische Eurostars-Programm. Dieses stärkt die internationale Forschungs- und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit von kroatischen kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) mit europäischen Partnern.
