10 years of contribution to the enlarged EU: efforts pay off

The 10-year implementation period for Switzerland’s enlargement contribution to the 10 central and eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004 came to an end on 14 June 2017. Under the contribution, Parliament approved a total of CHF 1 billion to implement 210 projects which have helped reduce economic and social disparities among broad sections of the population living in the EU.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Nicosia has the pleasure to announce its cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus to screen in March 2017 the award winning stop-motion animation feature film “My Life as Courgette” (Ma Vie de Courgette) in French at schools in Cyprus in the framework of Francophonie 2017.


Swiss government names new Ambassadors

The Swiss government (Federal Council) has approved the list of diplomatic staff transfers scheduled for 2014 submitted by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The changes will be made in accordance with the normal rate of transfers, to be communicated at the time of the decision by the Federal Council. The appointments of Heads of Mission take effect as soon as the authorities in the host country communicate their approval. The Federal Council takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to the Ambassadors due to retire for the services rendered.

More than 200 projects are now being implemented as part of the enlargement contribution. At the annual conference of Swiss Cooperation with Eastern Europe on 31 May 2013 in Bern, government representatives and experts from Switzerland and abroad discussed the importance and the impact of these projects. About 750 people took part in the annual conference in the Hotel National, an exceptionally high turnout.

Official meeting with the Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs

An official working meeting has taken place in La Chaux-de-Fonds between Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter and his Cypriot counterpart Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis. Their talks focused on the signing of the bilateral agreement on the protection of cultural goods. The purpose of this agreement is to contribute to the preservation and the exchange of the cultural heritage and to prevent the illicit trade in protected archaeological cultural goods. The two foreign ministers also discussed EU policy and the situation in the eastern Mediterranean in the light of the civil war in Syria.

In Cyprus, three different projects have gotten underway that are being supported by a contribution of almost CHF 6 million. With this, Switzerland’s enlargement contribution earmarked for Cyprus has already been completely distributed. The projects pursue the objective of reducing the economic and social disparities between Cyprus and the more advanced countries of the EU.

Scholarships for foreign residents in Cyprus for the academic year 2017-2018

The MBA Program of the School of Economics and Management of the University of Cyprus has announced that a number of scholarships are on offer to foreign residents in Cyprus for the academic years 2017-2018. The scholarships amount to 50% of total tuition, which currently stands at €10,250 and will be given upon entry based on academic criteria.
