Food security knowledge platform and policy dialogue India
India, a potent emerging economy of 1.3 billion people, has an endemic food insecurity affecting hundreds of millions of people today and is home of half of the world’s malnourished children. Complex societal structures and political deficiencies are part of the challenge. The present project aims at increasing the policy coherence for effective action to improve food and nutrition security. It will do so by bringing new evidence on the fundamental problems to be tackled, and by stimulating the dialogue between people and institutions engaged in poverty reduction, agricultural production, food distribution and economic development in the States of Gujarat, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Their joint engagement for better policies should help reduce food insecurity sustainably.

Policy makers are confronted with increasingly complex challenges to food security. While these are partly tackled by diverse sector policies or programmes in the Indian context, gaps and restricted coordination are limiting factors to their efficiency. Active policy dialogue across sectors and states and concerted efforts of a diversity of stakeholders based on evidence are needed to provide better conditions for the elaboration and implementation of effective policy responses |
