Decentralisation and Local Governance

Projekt abgeschlossen

Strengthening decentralisation efforts has been one of the key pillars of SDC's work in India as well as in other south Asian countries. In India, as the programmatic efforts aimed at strengthening decentralisation gained maturity and larger volumes of resources were available from the state as well as multilateral agencies, it was that a capitalisation exercise should be realised on this topic. The strong focus of the new SDC "Thematic Programme India' on Knowledge Management and South- South Cooperation provides a robust rationale for SDC to add value to the planned capitalisation exercise and propose a more comprehensive programme in support of Decentralisation. The Programme entails (i) consolidation of experiences supported so far in areas relating to strengthening decentralisation and transference of lessons to relevant actors within the country (ii) supporting the emergence of mature association/s of elected representatives and strengthening multi stakeholder platforms for taking up policy research and advocacy at the national level and, (iii) promoting regional exchange on relevant decentralisation related issues within the south Asian countries in which SDC operates (Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India) and, (iv) promoting experiences and lessons from Switzerland on direct democracy, devolution etc identified as relevant to India and the region through collaborative research and/or exchange programmes.
