Lifesaving Medical and Non-medical Supplies for the Health Sector in the Gaza Strip

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises, including protracted ones. Through an emergency funding to the World Health Organisation (WHO), SDC allows WHO to provide protection and assistance to those who are mostly affected by the latest deterioration of the health situation in the Gaza Strip through direct provision of lifesaving medical and non-medical supplies for the health sector.

| Hintergrund | Health service delivery in the Gaza Strip has been severely affected by the over 10-year-long closure imposed by Israel, and recent developments, including the ongoing electricity crisis, pushing the health sector to the brink of collapse. Since June 2017, Gaza has had only 4-6 hours of electricity per day, forcing hospitals to rely on back-up generators. Essential drugs and disposables have significantly depleted in supplies and critical elements of the health sector, such as vaccination storage, blood banks, and surgery are now under severe risk. |

| Zielgruppen | Generally, all patients seeking medical treatment in the Gaza Strip are targeted. More specifically, drugs procured under this allocation will target acutely vulnerable patients, who need emergency care. Another group of acutely vulnerable patients, who will benefit from the project, are those who suffer from chronic diseases. |

| Koordination mit anderen Projekten und Akteuren | WHO will liaise closely with the Central Drugs Store in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) to identify the needs and take account of all donations received. WHO will also coordinate with other health sector partners by sharing information and collaborating efforts to harmonize work and avoid any duplications. Special attention will be paid to the drugs that are required for emergency lifesaving treatment. |
