Consulate General of Switzerland in New York

Cleaner (100%) - Start date: February 1st, 2022

The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York covers all matters concerning consular relations and represents Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic, financial and legal affairs, as well as science, education and culture.

Job description

The Consulate of Switzerland in New York is looking for a Cleaner to help maintain our facilities and carry out cleaning duties. The successful candidate will support both the Consulate and the Permanent Mission of Switzerland by keeping common areas, including conference rooms, offices, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms clean and tidy.

We are looking for an individual who can commit to working full time. The Consulate will provide all necessary janitorial supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and dusting of designated facility areas. The areas that must be cleaned are floors, corridors, a stairway, bathrooms, window spaces, storage spaces, and kitchens
  • Cleaning, control and preparation of cutlery and tableware
  • Assisting with official hospitality functions including preparation of meeting rooms for events
  • Assist with inventory tracking, control and ordering of cleaning material

Minimum qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant, recent experience in a similar cleaning job in a commercial, industrial or government building or residence
  • General knowledge of cleaning methods

Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York

The Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York represents Switzerland's interests at the UN in accordance with the country's foreign policy objectives. Under the political guidance of the Swiss government, the Mission contributes to the work of the main UN bodies (General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council). In addition, Switzerland is a candidate for a seat on the Security Council for 2023-2024.

Job description

The position is part of the team within the Permanent Representation that is responsible for budgetary and administrative affairs, international law, human rights, communication as well as media, elections and candidatures.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in international law, particularly in areas related to public international law, international criminal law and international humanitarian law. The candidate is particularly motivated to work in the multilateral UN framework and has a strong affinity for analysis and synthesis, as well as a certain intellectual ease in dealing with complex issues. He or she has a strong interest in negotiation, including the development of negotiation strategies, can show good resilience capacity and high social competence, ease of contact, interest in intercultural exchanges and a strong respect for others.

Our ideal candidate has a Master's degree in law, preferably with a specialization in international law, including public international law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. Relevant professional and technical experience in the federal administration, a permanent mission or representation of Switzerland or in a multilateral forum would be an asset.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To support the Mission's legal advisor in the full scope of his/her duties, in particular in matters relating to public international law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, the International Criminal Court, the law of the sea, counter-terrorism and sanctions.
  • To represent Switzerland's interests in the negotiation of resolutions in the General Assembly (more specifically in the Sixth Committee of the UN), the Security Council as well as the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court. He or she will represent Switzerland vis-à-vis the UN Secretariat and the representations of other delegations in the above-mentioned areas, in close cooperation and interaction with the Mission's legal advisor.
  • To identify opportunities for Switzerland in the above-mentioned areas, to participate in meetings and working groups and develop initiatives.
  • To gather information, prepare legal analyses, draft reports.
  • To support the head office in the preparation of Swiss positions, contribute to the drafting of formal Swiss interventions or communication elements (including for social media).
  • To accompany and support delegations from the head office.

Requirements

  • Swiss nationality or permanent residence in Switzerland.
  • Master's degree in law, preferably with a specialization in international law, including public international law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. A qualification as attorney-at-law would be an asset.
  • Solid understanding of international politics and Swiss foreign policy, with a strong interest in areas related to international law, counter-terrorism and sanctions.
  • Experience with multilateral organizations or good knowledge of the work of multilateral organizations.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize and a certain comfort level with complex issues.
  • Strong interest in negotiation and ability to work in an intense work environment requiring good resistance to stress and a sense of priority.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to network.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, good knowledge of French as a second official language of the UN.

Job description

The Permanent Mission of Switzerland in New York is looking for a housekeeper and event manager, who professionally handles maintenance and administrative tasks and guarantees the smooth functioning of diplomatic receptions and events related to the Mission’s daily work. The successful candidate will show excellent organizational skills, forms, manners, and professional discretion. Housekeeping tasks include the reception and serving of guests in different locations, the preparation of meals for smaller groups, minor repairs, accounting and supervision of external workers, assisting with cleaning duties and gardening. We are looking for an individual who can commit to working full time, with a presence both at the the Ambassador’s Residence on the Upper East Side and at the Permanent Mission offices in Midtown.

  • Receiving and welcoming guests
  • Aiding with catering duties and meal preparation
  • Residence household management including completing small repairs, taking care of plants, cleaning and grocery shopping as needed
  • Small accounting tasks associated with catering services and other related expenses

Job description

The Legal, Budget and Communications team at the Swiss Mission is responsible for all legal, budgetary and administrative matters, including human rights, candidatures, elections and communication regarding Switzerland’s membership in the United Nations. We are currently looking to recruit a dynamic and well-organized person with a flair for administrative processes and a keen interest in diplomacy, multilateral affairs and the United Nations. The successful candidate will support the Permanent Mission of Switzerland during an intense phase of campaigning for a seat on the UN Security Council and – in the event of a successful election – during Switzerland’s two-year mandate as Council member (2023-2024). The successful candidate displays strong administrative skills and a highly structured approach to managing a significant volume of information while keeping track of multiple, parallel processes and thriving under pressure. Our ideal candidate combines these skills with a keen political interest in multilateral affairs and the UN in particular. Strong language skills in German and another Swiss official language, as well as in English, are crucial for the person we are looking to recruit.  

Responsibilities

  • Administrative and logistical support of the Legal, Budget and Communications team (10-12 persons), including management of information, contacts and calendars; correspondence in English and German/French; planning and assisting during events (in-person/on virtual platforms) and visits of high-level delegations
  • In close collaboration with the Personal Assistant(s) of the Head of Mission and her Deputy: Preparation of meetings of the Head of Mission/Deputy Head of Mission (documentation, background information, logistical support)
  • Responsible for the recruitment process of academic interns at the Mission
  • Working on thematic files (to be determined), including participation in meetings, reporting, drafting of talking points, organization of events, independently and/or in support of other members of the team

Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in an international setting; prior experience in the United Nations system a plus
  • Preferably: Bachelor’s degree in human resources, commercial education, communication, or a related field, proven interest in multilateral affairs and familiarity with Swiss Foreign Policy
  • Fluency in English, excellent knowledge of German or another Swiss official language (French or Italian) required
  • Outstanding organizational and information management skills, ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure
  • Full computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • High degree of personal integrity and trustworthiness, strong interpersonal skills
