Support to GRET bamboo initiative: “Strengthening the bamboo and rattan sectors in Lao PDR”

Maintaining high biodiversity in agro-ecosystems contributes to poverty reduction in rural livelihoods. Better knowledge, tools and institutional arrangements are needed to support poverty alleviation and preserve biodiversity. Considering the current development context in Lao PDR, GRET supports the conservation and sustainable economic use of bamboo and rattan, aiming at improving the livelihood of upland farmers and enhancing the policy environment.

Contribution to the Project on Cervical Cancer Prevention in Moldova

In Moldova, the cervical cancer incidence and mortality of women continues to be high due to very high proportion of late stage diagnoses. An integrated approach to cervical cancer prevention and control combining vaccination and regular cervical screening has the potential to reduce cervical cancer deaths by at least 80%. The project aims at reducing incidence and mortality due to cervical cancer through better access to and use of cost-effective and quality services within organized cervical cancer prevention program.

At the same time the Office is in the process of elaborating its new Strategic Plan for the period 2018 – 2021. It is within this context that Switzerland is taking over the Chairmanship of the ODSG from June 2017 until June 2018. The overall goal of the Swiss ODSG Chairmanship is to support and guide the organization towards a more sustainable position within the humanitarian ecosystem.

Honduras and Guatemala requested the Organization of American States and the United Nations to create mechanisms to combat corruption and impunity. The Support Mission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala are supported by international cooperation in improving the justice system, the public prosecutor, and the anti-corruption and Human Rights protection agencies. COSUDE contributes to existing mandates and strengthens regional interchange.

LEB – Improved Water Resources Monitoring and Integrated Water Resources Management in the North of Lebanon

For over five years now, the Syria crisis is continuing to affect middle-income neighbouring countries. As a result, Lebanon hosts the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. The weak governance of the Government has been worsened with the burden of the refugees from Syria and Palestine who use the same overstretched infrastructure and public services. The project aims at enabling the water authorities to better manage the water sector for the benefit of the vulnerable communities in the North of the country.

Promoting Social Entrepreneurship in selected countries

This regional program with national implementation components is a private-public-development-partnership (PPDP) supporting Social Entrepreneurs (SEs) contributing to solving societal and environmental problems with a market-based approach. The contribution identifies and supports selected SEs and helps them to reach out to the poor. It serves the creation of employment and income for low-income households improving their livelihoods. SEs use innovative ideas and business models that are well-aligned with SDC’s objectives of poverty reduction.

Based in Geneva, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria does not have representations in the countries receiving its grants. To foster effective the implementation of its support, the Global Fund relies on coordination mechanisms that gather the main country-based partners, including people affected by the diseases. SDC co-financing of the BACKUP Health initiative aims at strengthening this multi-stakeholder management of Global Fund grants, reinforce accountability and increase the impact of the Global Fund.

Sanitation Solutions for Underserved Communities in Jordan

The amount of water available from conventional sources in Jordan is decreasing dangerously, the population is increasing constantly and additional sources are needed urgently. By using treated wastewater as an alternative resource Jordan could reduce its dependence on fresh water. Proven Swiss expertise in the sanitation sector aims at increasing the efficiency of wastewater treatment systems and on turning wastewater streams into physical and financial resources. This will not only provide additional water but also reduce health risks and protect groundwater.
