Press releases, 24.10.2016

After thirteen years of cooperation, Switzerland and Jordan celebrated today the successful completion of the Jordan Civil Defence (JCD) USAR project supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Ambassador of Switzerland to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Mr. Hans-Peter Lenz and Major General Khalil Al-Dabbas, Deputy Director of JCD, jointly commended the classification as “heavy level” of the JCD USAR team.

To support Jordan Civil Defence capacity building in the field of natural and man-made hazard response, Switzerland has started cooperating with Jordan in 2003. In 2007, Jordan decided to upgrade its USAR capacities to the “heavy level” international standard. Thanks to the Swiss support, this objective was reached in May 2013 when the Jordanian USAR team was classified as first Arab team in the “heavy level” category. Three years after this event, Switzerland continues through its cooperation to ensure the sustainability and ownership of this project by JCD, notably thanks to “training of the trainers” modules given by Swiss civil defence instructors.

Throughout this project, SDC as contributed to the establishment and training of different units of JCD to reach the “heavy team” classification according to international standards and build-up readiness capacities for deployment within the Kingdom as well as abroad.

The ultimate objective of USAR is protect and save lives in case of disasters.
