8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, Geneva, June 2025

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is the most important international conference to discuss progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR. The eighth session of the Global Platform will be hosted by Switzerland in Geneva in June 2025. It will review advances in the realisation of the calls to action made in 2023 by the United Nations General Assembly on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework and will be key for the identification and support of measures to accelerate DRR implementation and improve coherence with the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.


CREWS - Contribution to the Climate Risks and Early Warning Systems Initiative

The Climate Risks and Early Warning Systems Initiative (CREWS) supports Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in creating necessary human capacities to generate and communicate climate and weather risks timely and effectively. This allows saving millions of lives and significantly reducing economic losses caused by natural disasters and a changing climate. The Swiss contribution supports CREWS as key mechanism to achieve the UN Early Warnings for All Initiative. The combined expertise of SDC and MeteoSwiss increases impact and sustainability of CREWS.

Contribution to the ICRC Climate and Environment Transition Fund

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is the main humanitarian partner of Switzerland. The ICRC Climate and Environment Transition Fund is designed to support climate and environment initiatives in ICRC operations worldwide. This will happen around three pillars: The ICRC will adapt its programmes, improve environmental protection in armed conflict and reduce its environmental footprint. Switzerland supports ICRC’s climate and environment transition by contributing to the Fund set up for this purpose.


Strengthening the climate resilience portfolio of the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery

Climate change is an amplifier of natural hazards and a threat to human lives, sustainable development and poverty reduction. The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank aims to substantially increase investments in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Building on Switzerland’s role as champion and custodian of climate resilience within GFDRR, it will support climate mainstreaming in all GFDRR activities.


Landscape Fire Management in the Western Balkans

01.09.2019 - 01.03.2027

Due to a changing climate and unsustainable land use practices, landscape fires have been on the rise in the Western Balkans, while fire management remains generally weak and not adapted for mounting challenges. This initiative will improve capacities in landscape fire management through regional cooperation and strengthen policy and action at national level by articulating the region with multilateral efforts and Swiss know-how and expertise. Local communities, most concerned by landscape fires, will be an integral part of the initiative’s approach to facilitate the establishment of long-term strategies for resilient landscapes.

Programme contribution to Caritas 2019-2020

Founded in 1901 as a catholic organisation, Caritas Switzerland (CACH) prevents, alleviates and combats poverty, while working across sectors and focusing on food security, access to clean and safe water, climate protection and disaster prevention, migration and education for children and adults. With its international programme that combines humanitarian work and development, CACH reaches out to 30 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia as well as in Eastern Europe.

Climate Change Adaptation in Mountains

Mountain societies and ecosystems are highly sensitive to climate change and adaptation measures are needed to increase their resilience. The programme will harness Swiss expertise and generate knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation solutions in mountains on the global level. It will feed expertise into regional science-policy platforms and global policy frameworks to advance adaptation planning, for the benefit of vulnerable mountain communities.

UNICEF, Strengthening WASH Response in Humanitarian Action, Geneva – 2018-2019

In 2019, the Global WASH cluster will continue the implementation of the four strategic objectives set out in the 2016 – 2020 Strategic Plan. The Swiss contribution will focus on Capacity building, Advocacy as well as Knowledge management, three strategic objectives which have received only limited attention in the last years. The Swiss contribution will contribute to ensuring predictable, timely and effective WASH response by the WASH cluster partners in humanitarian crises through direct and indirect field support.


Climate Risks and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Partnership

The global Climate Risks and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Partnership supports Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in creating necessary human capacities to generate and communicate climate and weather risks timely and effectively. This allows to save millions of lives and significantly reduce economic losses caused by natural disasters and a changing climate. Providing Swiss development, humanitarian and insurance expertise to the CREWS Partnership will contribute to increased impact and sustainability of public and private investments in this field.

Contribution to the Swiss NGO Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Platform, 2017-2018

The Swiss NGO DRR Platform is a network of NGO professionals dedicated to increase the resilience of women and men, communities and governments to all aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA). The Platform strengthens and professionalizes the Swiss NGO’s work related to DRR and CCA through exchange and learning, conceptual support and technical advice and advocacy work at the national and international level.

ICVA, Core Contribution 2017-2019

By supporting ICVA, Switzerland contributes to strengthen dialogue and engagement among diverse humanitarian actors. Targeting NGO’s, UN agencies, Member States and intergovernmental organizations, ICVA aims to improve synergies between policy discussions at the global level (especially Geneva), humanitarian hubs - mainly in the ‘global south, with the realities of field operations.
