Background | Seven years after the adoption of the Agenda 2030 with its 17 goals for sustainable development (SDG), the world community is far from overcoming extreme poverty. The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine triggered an increase in global poverty since 1990; 250 million people could fall into extreme poverty by the end of 2022. The gap between the rich and the poor countries continues to rise. There is a direct connection between climate change and poverty; both particularly affect poor countries in the Global South. Violence, high population growth and the consequences of climate change aggravate the problems to which people usually react with migration. In 2019, 3.5% of the world’s population were international migrants, mostly male (52%) and of working age (74%). By 2050, about 143 million people could become climate migrants. |
Objectives |
End poverty in all its forms and dimensions by covering basic needs, increasing equality of opportunities and strengthening resilience. Globally, Caritas provides emergency relief in disasters and is actively involved in reconstruction work. With its projects in development cooperation, Caritas supports children and adults in the areas of income, climate and migration. |
