Integrated Monitoring of Water and Sanitation related SDG targets (GEMI)

Project completed

Water scarcity and declining water quality are a problem in almost all countries. More comprehensive information on their current status and trends would enable Member States to better make evidence-based development decisions for sustainable development, management and use of sanitation and water resources. The 6th Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agendawill provide a unique opportunity to address the multiple and growing challenges associated with sustainable water and sanitation. This includes the need for a coherent and holistic monitoring framework with improved data acquisition and the analysis to track progress.

Background

Critical water management and investment decisions made by governments have regional and global consequences, but are often taken without access to the correct, most up-to-date information. The SDG’s proposal offers the opportunity for a much more comprehensive and integrated approach to sustainable water and sanitation monitoring. This calls for a mechanism to develop a coherent and coordinated monitoring process, both at international and national levels.

Objectives

Accelerate the achievement of the SDG targets on sustainable water and sanitation by:

  • Establishing and managing, by 2030, a coherent and unified monitoring framework for water and sanitation to inform the post-2015 period;
  • Contributing to country progress through well-informed decision-making, based on harmonized, comprehensive, timely and accurate information.
Target groups
  • Line ministries, departments and National Statistical Offices responsible for tracking progress towards achieving the SDG targets in countries;
  • UN Member States, civil society, private sector, multilateral organisations, international financial institutions, regional organisations, research and educational organisations and independent experts.
Medium-term outcomes

First progress towards 2030 objectives of sustainable water and sanitation monitoring being:

  • Coherent integrated and efficient monitoring framework in place for agreed SDG indicators;
  • Member States engaged and their capacity en-hanced in collecting, reporting and using data;
  • A global reporting framework is in place to inform development decisions;
  • The global monitoring is coordinated and consistently communicated.
Results

Expected results:

  • Monitoring tools and methodologies developed, combined into a single monitoring guide to use on the country level, and global baseline established
  • Methodologies developed for each indicator, combining traditional and innovative data collection
  • Proof-of-concept process carried out in a selected number of countries, followed by first baseline survey
  • Engagement of other countries and building of national interest and capacity for GEMI started.
