Integrated Monitoring of Water and Sanitation related SDG targets (GEMI)
Water scarcity and declining water quality are a problem in almost all countries. More comprehensive information on their current status and trends would enable Member States to better make evidence-based development decisions for sustainable development, management and use of sanitation and water resources. The 6th Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agendawill provide a unique opportunity to address the multiple and growing challenges associated with sustainable water and sanitation. This includes the need for a coherent and holistic monitoring framework with improved data acquisition and the analysis to track progress.

Background |
Critical water management and investment decisions made by governments have regional and global consequences, but are often taken without access to the correct, most up-to-date information. The SDG’s proposal offers the opportunity for a much more comprehensive and integrated approach to sustainable water and sanitation monitoring. This calls for a mechanism to develop a coherent and coordinated monitoring process, both at international and national levels. |
