Wiwanana Foundation (WWF)

Wiwanana started as a community mobilization project in 1999 implemented by Solidarmed in Cabo Delgado. By mid-2013 Wiwanana became an independent organization, therefore institutional development also became a priority. Despite the progress in both areas, the period of implementation was not yet enough to ensure that it was established as a robust local organization. Fortunately, the start of the current phase coincides with implementation of the Strategic Plan and the emergence of two additional funding partners (UNFPA and CUAMM), with Solidarmed committed to continuing its support to the organization. The new project with UNFPA, will allow Wiwanana to expand its intervention from 2 Districts (Chiure, Ancuabe), to 4 (also Namuno and Balama).

Wiwanana Foundation is a sustainable (economic and institutional) organization. As a result of its strength it delivers quality health services and plays a key advocacy role in Cabo Delgado Province.

• Internal governance, accountability and internal control systems (inclusive and gender sensitive) improved
• Administration system and financial management improved, more efficient and transparent
• Strengthened human resources (with capacities relevant to their role) and motivated, based on a gender-sensitive approach
• Capacities for demonstrating results, for becoming more visible and for funding the organization improved (gender-sensitive)
• Infrastructure and equipment for the normal functioning of the organization assured

Resultados previstos:  

• Governance structures[1] have been reformulated and are efficient
• Human and technical capacity of all WWF are strengthened
• Missing systems and administration tools are produced and implemented
• New office building built and equipment acquired

Resultados de las fases anteriores:  

• Demand for usage of the formal health systems has increased in Chiúre and Ancuabe Districts. Last year, there was a peak of people accessing Volunteer Counselling and Testing and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections. And care and support (ante and post-natal care) for expectant mothers in communities have improved, leading to growing proportions of institutional deliveries.
• There are reported changes in attitudes and practices detrimental to health. Communities have shifted from the unsanitary open defecation practice and started constructing and using latrines. Sanitation has improved, with 4 communities being certified as ODF (open defecation free) in Chiúre and Ancuabe in 2015.
• Wiwanana has formally been recognized as an autonomous local organization, has established its pillars and has demonstrated its capacity to work independently and for being accountable (internally and externally).
