Ashshash – for men and women who have escaped trafficking
Human trafficking deprives millions of their dignity and freedom. It is estimated that thousands are trafficked every year in Bangladesh. Switzerland has an interest that international migration is regular, secure, and respects human dignity and the rights of migrants. The project will support men and women who have escaped trafficking to reintegrate into society, raise awareness on the perils of irregular migration and improve public and private capacities to deliver services to the victims of trafficking. The intervention is beneficial for Switzerland’s political dialogue on safe, orderly and regular migration at the global level.

- Men and women who have escaped trafficking improve their social and economic well-being by using services for reintegration.
- Institutions are made more accountable and effective in providing services beneficial to men and women who have escaped trafficking.

| Contexto | While no numbers or percentages can be assigned, media suggests that the numbers of men, women and children who are trafficked from Bangladesh, is on the rise. Additionally, in Bangladesh, the high profits coupled with low penalties for the crime has made trafficking attractive to criminal gangs and large-scale organized crime rackets. Factors that have contributed to increased trafficking are: high supply of low-skilled labour, lack of prosecution of traffickers, lack of information on safe migration and no protection of those who have escaped trafficking (leading to re-trafficking). The promotion of a stable, economically and socially inclusive Bangladesh is in the interest of Switzerland with a view to peace, security and prosperity in the densely populated region of South Asia. Winrock International has been selected as implementer of the project since it has long standing experience and proven track record in policy influencing. |

The project will reach out to at least 300’000 men and women in their communities to inform them about trafficking and its consequences. In addition, the proposed intervention is expected to have an impact on 5’000 men and women who have escaped trafficking in Khulna, Satkhira, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazaar and Cumilla. Out of the 5’000 men and women who will directly receive support from the project, at least 90% (4’500 men and women) are poor and 60% (3’000 men and women) disadvantaged. Among the 5’000 beneficiaries, at least 70% (3’500) are women. Within the disadvantaged groups, there will be a particular focus on women, and people from ethnic or religious minorities. |
