Ecuador Earthquake: Contribution to IFRC Emergency Appeal
On 16 April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck coastal areas in north-west Ecuador. The most affected areas are the provinces of Manabi,Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos, for which the Government has declared a “state of emergency”. Through its Emergency Appeal, the IFRC aims at supporting the Ecuadorian Red Cross (ERC) to assist 100’000 people affected by the earthquake over a period of 12 months and will focus on health, WASH, shelter, and livelihoods.

- The shelter response of humanitarian actors is strengthened through enhanced leadership, coordination and accountability.
- The immediate shelter and settlement needs of the target population are met (Emergency Phase).
- The target population has safe and adequate shelter (Recovery Phase).
- Timely, predictable, and widely accessible shelter coordination services are provided to humanitarian shelter actors.
- Essential household items and emergency shelter assistance are provided to the target population.

On 16 April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake (Richter scale) struck coastal areas in north-west Ecuador, its epicentre located close to the town of Muisne and 170km northwest of the capital Quito. Although the epicentre was situated in a remote rural area, several towns in coastal provinces were affected. More than 300 aftershocks have been registered to date. It is estimated that approximately 720’000 of the 7 million people living in six affected provinces have suffered from the earthquake and require assistance. As of 25.04.2016 (figures from the Ecuadorian Government), there are 655 reported deaths, more than 17’000 injured and 29’000 people living now in shelters. Close to 7’000 buildings were destroyed and 281 schools were affected. |

A total of 100’000 earthquake-affected people in urban and rural areas have their immediate humanitarian needs met, and are supported to take steps towards recovering their livelihoods. SDC will ear-mark its contribution to shelter. |
