CERAH’s mission aims at enhancing the capacity of individual and institutional humanitarian actors to devise and bring relevant, adapted and timely responses to the plight of populations affected by armed conflict, disasters or social exclusion. To that end, it aims at strengthening the competencies of humanitarian professionals through internationally recognized education and training, at improving humanitarian responses through critical research of humanitarian concepts, policies and practices and to stimulate debate on selected humanitarian issues to further critical and innovative thinking. This project aims at furthering systematization and professionalization of humanitarian activities and actors, with the stated goal to make the humanitarian sector more coherent and accountable.

Contexto

Humanitarian contexts are increasingly characterized by great diversity and complexity, warranting ever greater professionalization in the sector.  Furthermore, this proposal is in line with the  the Task Force Genève International (TAFOGI) report approved by the Federal Council in 2013, which lists various recommendations in order to strengthen the international Geneva, including promotion of thematic platforms and of capacity building programmes.

  • Reinforcement of the multilateral humanitarian system through the promotion of collaboration between humanitarian actors and the academic world

  • Promotion of training of humanitarian agents, as well as of reflection and research on humanitarian action

  • Promotion of Geneva as humanitarian hub

Resultados previstos:  

Internationally recognized high quality training and research focused on humanitarian organisations’ current and future challenges. Specific outputs benefiting from the core contribution are:

 

  • Pilot project “Humanitarian Distance Learning”
  • Pilot project “Encyclopaedia of Humanitarian Action”


Resultados de las fases anteriores:  

Switzerland has supported the CERAH since its inception in 2008, and has beforehand supported its predecessors, the Programme interdisciplinaire en Action Humanitaire (PIAH) and the PPAH (Programme Plurifacultaire Action Humanitaire). In that time, the center has become a well-established educational provider in the humanitarian sector, offering eight post-graudate degrees and several seminars.

It is well placed within a strong net of strategic partnerships and has become an important organizer of public conferences and seminars on humanitarian issues.
