AF Government School Support Program (GSSP)
The Government School Support Program (GSSP) supports the Afghan Ministry of Education (MoE) to enhance quality of education at secondary level. The aim is to increase student enrolment, retention and learning. It works with 200 secondary schools as well as provincial and district education departments and communities in 3 of the poorest provinces (Badakhshan, Baghlan and Bamyan) of Afghanistan. GSSP is part of the Aga Khan Foundation’s (AKF) education programme.

Contexto |
Afghanistan has seen considerable progress over the past 12 years in terms of access to education. The increase in enrolment from 1 million pupils in 2001 (almost all boys) to today’s enrolment of more than 9 million students (40.5 % of whom are girls) stands out as one of the most significant achievements. Enrolment of girls in Bamyan and Badakhshan are higher than the national average (46%) while girls’ enrolment in Baghlan is at 37.5%. Despite major achievements in the last decade, access to education still remains a big challenge for the MoE and development partners, with various problems such as: shortage of qualified female teachers and school administrators especially in rural areas, poor quality of teaching, lack of adequate infrastructure and poor academic supervision practices. |
