Clean Air Asia: Accelerating better air action in Asian cities - CABAC
Air pollution poses a significant challenge to public health, environmental sustainability and the climate, particularly in Asia. Switzerland has been supporting China through scientific exchanges in better identifying sources of pollution. The progress made by China is of interest to countries in the region facing similar challenges. Clean Air Asia, one of the few INGOs operating in China, will facilitate these knowledge exchanges, with a special focus on Mongolia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Contexto | The need for action against air pollution is making its way on the agenda of Asian authorities; China made substantive progress over the last 10 years in addressing the air pollution issue at scale. Switzerland provided technical know-how to China to better identify the sources of air pollution which are essential to formulate efficient strategies. This project is capitalising on this bilateral cooperation results by working with China to share regionally good practices and challenges faced concerning air pollution control. |
Objetivos | Air pollution in targeted Asian cities is reduced, thereby improving health, livelihoods and resilience of disadvantaged and the most vulnerable people and protecting the climate and environment. |
Grupos destinarios | This contribution will target central and local governments, research institutions and academia, international organisations and global policy platforms as well as further stakeholders in Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, and China. |
Efectos a medio plazo |
1. Increased Awareness and Understanding: Through knowledge exchange activities, stakeholders gain a deeper understanding of the causes, impacts, and solutions related to air pollution. 2. Enhanced Capacity for Action: Stakeholders acquire the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to implement effective air pollution mitigation measures. 3. Strengthened Regional Policy Dialogue: Knowledge and best practices shared among policymakers in the country and policy dialogue in the region fostered through collaborative networks. |
Resultados |
Resultados previstos: - Baseline study and needs assessment of target countries and cities - Compendium of best practices - Training programme and site visits for officials of national and city governments - National and city level actions supported with technical assistance in Vietnam and Indonesia - Collaborative network for science-based clean air actions in Asia - Development and implementation of science-based clean air policies in target countries and cities Resultados de las fases anteriores: Baseline for first phase Mongolia: National Program for Reducing Air and Environmental Pollution 2017-2025 has faced implementation challenges and has prompted the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to enhance technical capacity and to implement air quality improvement programs. Indonesia: Despite Jakarta having advanced the monitoring and implementation of clean air action plans, the governments of adjacent cities are behind in terms of monitoring, formulating and implementing clean air action plans. Vietnam: National Action Plan on Air Quality Management (2020-2025) to manage and minimize air pollution: While these measures could partially help address Vietnam’s pollution, long-term national policies and stronger enforcement of existing policies are still urgently needed. |
