Contesto | The international environment is characterised by numerous multiple crises. The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the escalation in the Middle East, food insecurity, debt burden and inflation, climate change and the energy crisis are all having a direct impact on the world's population. They particularly affect the most vulnerable, mostly women and children and result in increasing humanitarian needs. Accelerated change is accompanied by increased uncertainty: The world is becoming more fragmented, unstable and unpredictable. Whilst the vision to reach the Sustainable Development Goals remains, challenges includingt he accelerating global food and nutrition crisis, shrinking civic and humanitarian space, the erosion of rule of law, intensifying armed conflicts, more frequent climate-related disasters, international migration and forced displacement, exacerbated demographics and an important gender gap hamper progress in reaching them. Furthermore, infectious diseases such as cholera, measles, diphtheria and hepatitis, have reached unprecedented levels and are occurring in countries that are already overwhelmed by forgotten crises, including Niger, Chad and Yemen. Climate-sensitive diseases - like malaria or dengue - and neglected tropical diseases require special consideration. Acute malnutrition due to food insecurity is still a significant medical humanitarian issue that contributes to child mortality and worsens chronic medical conditions. Barriers to meeting humanitarian needs have grown. Thus, securing impartial spaces for gender-sensitive medical humanitarian action in favour of the most at risks is a priority for MSF-CH, including for the security of its own staff and facilities. The ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances remains paramount for MSF-CH. |
Obiettivi | Guided by medical ethics and the principles of impartiality, independence and neutrality, contribute to saving lives and alleviating the suffering of people in situation of acute and chronic crises by ensuring affordable and sustainable access to quality medical care for the most in need. |

In 2023, MSF-CH managed 112 medical humanitarian projects in 33 countries. A particular focus of MSF-CH’s operations was to provide quality health care, including mental health, access to safe drinking water and sanitation measures, and other basic needs to people affected by violence such as in Soudan. Yemen. Ukraine. Burkina Faso and the DRC. Overall results in 2023 include: Medical services: With MSF-CH’s support, more than 4 million men, women and children received quality, life-saving medical services: Moret han 1.3 millionc hildreni n the DRC, Chad, Yemen and Tanzania were vaccinated against measles as a measure to prevent death in children under 5 years of age. More than 1’800 survivors of sexual violence who accessed medical care, including psychosocial support. Nearly 220,000 people were admitted into medical facilities of MSF-CH with rising numbers of women and girls resulting from an increase of health services responding to their specific needs. Moreover MSF-CH ensured over 2.3 million out-patient consultations, including antenatal consultations for pregnant women, paediatric consultations for girls and boys with diarrhoea or respiratory diseases, and follow-up consultations for people with non-communicable diseases like diabetes. Innovation, and improvements of tools and protocols: MSFCH led the first hepatitis E-vaccination campaign in an IDP camp in South Soudan; advocated for national guidelines on advanced HIV management in Mozambique and developed, in cooperation with the EPFL, a personal protective suit for treating infectious diseases. Policy dialogue: Thanks to MSF-CH’s endeavors, the MSF’s training module on cervical cancer screening and diagnosis has been approved by the Kyrgyz academic and health authorities and has been integrated into 20 schools across the country. Early detection and treatment of cervical cancer contributes to reduce morbidity and mortality rates among women. Advocacy: in addition to responding to the immediate needs of displaced people from Sudan, MSF-CH advocated for other humanitarian organisations and institutional donors, including Switzerland, to scale up. MSF-CH’s efforts led to more visibility of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. |
Risultati dell'impegno svizzero nella fase precedente | Strengthening local civil society partners: MSF-CH further enhanced the capacities of patients and communities to become partners (PPP) in the provision of medical services. The PPP approach was central to MSF-CH work in lkongo, a landlocked district in Madagascar that has numerous health needs and faces major environmental challenges. MSF-CH set up a new project that combines two of its strategic objectives: PPP and planetary health. The aim is to improve the health of the population, preserve the local environment and develop activities in line with peopIe’s expressed needs. The project is being designed and implemented with partner communities and local organisations. PSEAH: in January 2023, MSF-CH launched its new Integrity Line portal. It is an important tool to reduce barriers to reporting abuse by offering a platform in 16 different languages, requiring low connectivity and accessible anonymously. Awareness sessions on PSEAH were held in 10 countries, covering 24 sites. For the first time, prevention officers were deployed in an acute emergency, in eastern Chad. To ensure sustainability, in-country facilitators were identified during each project visit. Special efforts were made to reach out to Ministry of Health staff who work with MSF-CH and receive incentives. |
