Deployment of unarmed Swiss military observers in Syria

The Federal Council has decided in a circular procedure to send up to eight army members to participate in the mission to monitor the ceasefire and the peace plan in Syria. This decision is a response to an enquiry by the UN.


Official visit to Bern by the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman

On 24 April 2012 Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter received the Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman for an official working visit in Bern. The talks covered relations between Switzerland and Israel, the Middle East peace process, humanitarian aspects and the development of the political situation in the Middle East and North Africa.


Switzerland to participate in the advance team of the UN mission to Syria

On Wednesday, the Federal Council decided to send up to six members of the Swiss Armed Forces to take part in the advance team of the UN mission to report on a cessation of violence in Syria. They will be deployed as unarmed military observers. This decision was taken following a request from the UN.


Sharing responsibility: Humanitarian Aid annual conference in Basel

With the motto "Sharing responsibility" and in the presence of Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Humanitarian Aid and the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit have held their annual conference in Basel. Manuel Bessler, the Federal Council's new Delegate for Humanitarian Aid, chaired the conference for the first time. He and Federal Councillor Burkhalter explained plans to further develop Switzerland's humanitarian aid work. Other speakers included the UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Guy Morin, President of the Executive Council of Basel-Stadt.


Switzerland closes its Embassy in Damascus

Position - For reasons of security, Switzerland temporarily closed its Embassy in Damascus as of 29 February 2012. Last August, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA had already called the Swiss Ambassador back to Bern for consultations. Furthermore, since November 2011, the FDFA has been calling upon Swiss citizens in Syria to leave the country immediately.


Didier Burkhalter opens the session of the Human Rights Council

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), opened on Monday the 19th session of the Human Rights Council, in Geneva. In his first speech to the Council, he appealed to the Syrian authorities to end immediately the use of force and other repressive measures against civilians. The situation in Syria is the main item on the agenda of this session of the Human Rights Council. On this occasion, Mr Burkhalter met several of his counterparts currently in Geneva, including the foreign ministers of France, Alain Juppé, and of Iran, Mr Ali Akbar Salehi.



Upheaval in the Arab world – a turning point for Europe and Switzerland

Participants in the Annual Conference of the FDFA's Political Affairs Division IV - Human Security, held today in Bern, heard at first hand how those directly concerned in the region are affected by the upheaval, how the European Union and Switzerland are responding, and what repercussions the turmoil is having on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The FDFA recalls the Swiss Ambassador in Syria to Bern for consultations

Switzerland condemns the recent acts of violence committed by the Syrian security forces against the civilian population. It has repeatedly and publicly called on the authorities to respect fundamental freedoms. The actions of the Syrian security forces are not acceptable. For this reason, the FDFA has recalled the Swiss Ambassador in Damascus to Bern for consultations.


Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey attends the Regional Ambassadors Conference in Doha

The heads of the Swiss Embassies and Cooperation Offices in the Near and the Middle East gathered in Doha from 19 to 21 June 2011 for a Regional Ambassadors Conference. Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department for Foreign Affairs FDFA, also took part in the Conference, which dealt with the current developments and changes taking place in the Arab world and the future Swiss foreign policy in the region.
