Rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association at centre of Switzerland's work in the Human Rights Council in Geneva

The Human Rights Council in Geneva today suspended its 43rd session as a measure against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. During the three weeks in which the Council was held, Switzerland was able to underscore the importance of the promotion and protection of human rights as a prerequisite for peace and the prevention of conflicts, and for sustainable economic and social development.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis on official visit to Paris

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), paid an official visit to Paris from 9 to 10 March 2020. Talks with his French counterpart, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, focused on bilateral relations, Switzerland's European policy and international current affairs. Measures adopted by the international community to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus were also discussed.


FDFA statement on military escalation in Syria

The FDFA is very concerned about the military escalation in north-western Syria and the serious impact this is having on the civilian population. It calls on all parties to the conflict to comply strictly with international law, in particular international humanitarian law, and to return to the negotiating table with a view to implementing an immediate ceasefire. Switzerland raised its concerns with the UN Human Rights Council on 27 February 2020.


FDFA statement on continuing hostilities in Syrian province of Idlib

The FDFA is deeply concerned by the ongoing hostilities in the province of Idlib and the serious impact this is having on the civilian population. It calls on all parties to the conflict not only to comply strictly with international humanitarian law, but also to return to the negotiating table and find a political solution within the framework of the peace process under the aegis of the United Nations in Geneva, which the FDFA actively supports.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis receives UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to discuss a political solution to the Syrian conflict

Federal Councillor and head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis has met with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, in Bern to discuss the situation in Syria and possible ways of finding a political solution. They conferred about the most recent escalation of the conflict in north-eastern Syria and the upcoming first meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva by the end of the month. Switzerland provides humanitarian support for the people of Syria and neighbouring countries.


Federal Council calls for immediate end to hostilities and facilitates provision of humanitarian aid in Syria

The Federal Council condemns Turkey's military intervention in Syria, which it considers to be in violation of the UN Charter and therefore contrary to international law. It calls on Turkey to immediately cease all hostilities and to work through negotiation towards immediate de-escalation and a political solution to the conflict. Switzerland has stated this position to Turkey several times in recent days. At the same time, the Federal Council decided at its meeting of 16 October 2019 to aid the establishment of business relations necessary for the work of the humanitarian actors active in Syria. The amended ordinance on measures against Syria will enter into force on 15 November 2019.


Switzerland steps up efforts to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis – Ignazio Cassis announces extra 7 million

Every year, 2.5 million people die of AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. At a pledging conference hosted in Lyon on Thursday in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis announced a CHF 7 million increase in Switzerland's contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Geneva-based Global Fund is a priority multilateral partner for Switzerland's international cooperation.




UN General Assembly: Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis calls for a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict and climate change mitigation

Federal Councillor and head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis has set several priorities as Switzerland celebrates 100 years of multilateralism this year. Last week, he signed a joint declaration with the Canton and City of Geneva reaffirming their commitment to International Geneva's role as a centre of global governance. At the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr Cassis has now called on the international community to strengthen human rights, adding that this will require innovative approaches. During his stay in New York, Mr Cassis will also speak about UN reforms and climate change mitigation, hold bilateral talks, and meet staff of the Swiss mission to the UN and the Swiss consulate general in the city.


Ignazio Cassis discusses Cyprus question and Syrian crisis with Turkish counterpart

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, culminated his trip to the eastern Mediterranean with a visit to Turkey. During his meeting with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Ankara, he spoke, among other things, about the open Cyprus question, human rights, and developments in Syria and their consequences for the region and Europe.


Federal Councillor Cassis to make working visits to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will visit the two EU member states Cyprus and Greece as well as Turkey from 8 to 12 July 2019. In addition to talks with his counterparts in Cyprus and Turkey and a courtesy call on the president of Greece, the programme also includes a visit to the UN buffer zone in Cyprus and the refugee camp on the Greek island of Samos.
