Bilateral relations Switzerland–Mauritania

Switzerland recognized Mauritania in 1960 and established diplomatic relations with the young country one year later. In 1976, the two countries concluded a trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and an agreement on economic and technical cooperation, yet economic exchange remained modest.

Although Mauritania is not a priority country for Swiss development aid, the SDC nevertheless supports non-governmental organizations such as “Terre des hommes”, which are involved in areas including healthcare and education and improving living conditions. In 1970 and 1980, Switzerland provided food aid for the victims of the drought.
