The frequency and magnitude of disasters have increased significantly in recent years. Switzerland and the EU have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in order to respond more effectively to emergencies in Europe and worldwide. On 28 April 2017, the two partners signed an administrative agreement to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices.

The authority in charge of implementing the Federal Act on Private Security Services Provided Abroad (PSSA) has published its first activity report, covering the period from September 2015 to December 2016. It reviewed some 300 declarations by private security companies.

“We are mobilising humanitarian assistance for the people of Yemen and telling them loud and clear that they have not been forgotten”, said the head of the FDFA at the beginning of the donor conference in Geneva. At the conference organised by the United Nations, Switzerland and Sweden, CHF 1.1 billion was pledged to alleviate the suffering of the people of Yemen. These funds are urgently needed because Yemen is currently experiencing the biggest famine worldwide.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is inviting visitors at LUGA, the Spring Fair of Central Switzerland, to come and taste, smell and discover some aspects of their work. The special exhibition ‘Beyond one’s own four kitchen walls’ shows how Switzerland contributes to the reduction of poverty and hunger while promoting ecologically sound agriculture in countries such as Kosovo, Vietnam and Benin. This year’s LUGA runs from 28 April to 7 May 2017.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres made his first official visit to Bern this Monday. It began with a meeting with Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter to address the current crises and conflict prevention as priority issues. Increasing the focus on conflict and crisis prevention is a shared goal of Switzerland and the UN. In this context, the two officials discussed augmenting the role of International Geneva and the issue of UN reforms. Mr Guterres was to end the day with a working dinner hosted by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Doris Leuthard.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer as Head of the Swiss delegation, Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, will take part in the joint Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., from 21 to 23 April 2017. Prior to these meetings, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will represent Switzerland at the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors.

On 19 April 2017 member states of the UN Economic and Social Council reappointed Switzerland to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, ensuring the country's representation in the UN’s most important body for drugs policy. The appointment lasts four years and will start in 2018.

At its meeting of 12 April, the Federal Council has commissioned the FDFA to prepare the introduction of a new system for all categories of transferable staff within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The aim of this change in system is to take better account of performance and give greater weight to the alignment of tasks and competencies than the principle of seniority. Accompanying measures are planned to take account of the specific nature of the transfer system – which requires employees working in the service of Swiss foreign policy to move to a new function every four years. The new system is scheduled to enter into force in 2019.

Multilateral development banks play a central role in supporting the poorest developing countries. Their expertise and size enable them to tackle global challenges such as financial crises, climate change and pandemics. On 12 April 2017, the Federal Council therefore decided to allocate the necessary resources to participate in replenishing the corresponding funds, namely the International Development Agency (IDA), the World Bank, the African Development Fund (AfDF) and the Asian Development Fund (AsDF).

The Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has chosen Ambassador Jürg Lauber to succeed Gilles Carbonnier as Vice-President of the institution, who will end his second four-year term on 31 March 2026. Currently Switzerland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, Jürg Lauber is also this year the President of the UN Human Rights Council.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, today welcomed the foreign minister of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, to Bellinzona for the fourth round of Switzerland and China's strategic dialogue. The meeting also coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

On 9 October 2025, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, met with his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel for official talks in Lisbon. The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight the close and strong ties between Switzerland and Portugal, which are strengthened in particular by the large Portuguese community living in Switzerland. Current geopolitical issues were also discussed.

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted, by a large majority, a resolution put forward by Switzerland and seven other countries to ensure that those facing the death penalty have the right to equality before the law. This success represents a further step on the way to abolishing capital punishment. The 60th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) ended today following a month's work. This was also the final session chaired by Swiss diplomat Jürg Lauber.

Switzerland and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea signed an agreement today on the restitution of CHF 22.8 million to Equatorial Guinea. The funds will be used to finance a project aimed at improving the quality of and access to primary healthcare services for vulnerable peoples in four of the Central African country's provinces. The funds returned will therefore benefit the country's population.

During the high-level week of the 80th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the FDFA highlighted its priorities: promoting peace, respecting international humanitarian law and strengthening multilateral cooperation. Conformément aux efforts déployés depuis longtemps par la Suisse en faveur d'une solution politique au conflit au Proche-Orient, le conseiller fédéral Ignazio Cassis a participé à New York à la conférence sur la solution à deux États. Cette conférence est une reprise de la réunion de haut-niveau tenue au mois de juillet dans le cadre de l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU sur le même sujet. At its meeting on 20 December 2019, the Federal Council approved an exchange of notes between Switzerland and Italy regarding the change of the customs status of the Italian enclave of Campione d'Italia. This exchange of notes is necessary to ensure legal certainty and facilitates the transition of Campione d'Italia into the European Union's customs territory, scheduled for 1 January 2020.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has opened the Global Refugee Forum together with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. The purpose of the forum, which takes place on 17 and 18 December at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, is to find shared solutions to meet the needs of refugees and their host communities.

On 13 December 2019, the Federal Council decided to extend for one year the preventive freeze on the assets relating to Tunisia and Ukraine. The purpose of this decision is to support the judicial cooperation between Switzerland and these two states.
