Outreach Symposium

Your Excellencies,

Dear Colleagues,

The outbreak and continuing spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have received much attention over the past several weeks. As Co-organisers of the Symposium “Innovations in Nuclear Disarmament Verification: Advancing Technology and Approaches”, we have closely monitored the situation and undertaken a careful risk assessment considering guidance from the Swiss federal and cantonal authorities as well as from the “meeting guidelines: COVID-19” published by the United Nations Office at Geneva (see attachment).

After careful consideration, we have decided that the Symposium originally scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 18 -19, 2020 will not take place on those dates. The working meeting of IPNDV will not take place, either. While we regret having to take this decision, we feel it is the most prudent course of action. Participants are encouraged to cancel their travel arrangements, in particular the hotel reservations, individually (by e-mail to: reservations@shgeneva.ch).

The International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) is addressing the complex challenges of accurately monitoring and verifying future nuclear disarmament activities which will likely subject countries to more intrusive verification than ever before. Many of the procedures and technologies that will be needed do not yet exist, and the Partnership is developing, exercising, and testing technologies, concepts and approaches that can address these gaps.

The Partnership enables countries to share knowledge and advance international thinking on nuclear disarmament verification.  Hundreds of experts from 25+ countries with and without nuclear weapons participate.  Over the past five years, participants have identified procedures and technologies that will help lay a foundation for future reductions in nuclear weapons and advances in nuclear disarmament verification.

Join us for an exciting interactive experience to learn more about the IPNDV’s work and help address challenging issues related to nuclear disarmament verification—just a few weeks before the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Participation is free of charge.
