Bern, Press releases, 17.12.2012

The Director-General of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, has named the Swiss author Metin Arditi as a Goodwill Ambassador. The designation ceremony will be held on 18 December at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Switzerland will be represented at the ceremony by its permanent delegate to UNESCO, Ambassador Rodolphe Imhoof.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) welcomes this appointment. Mr. Arditi, who lives and works in Geneva, is a distinguished essayist, novelist, academic, philanthropist and a longstanding patron of science and the arts. His appointment as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador is a recognition of the major contribution to education, science and culture that Mr. Arditi has made over the years.

Mr. Arditi has also established two non-profit foundations, the Foundation Arditi and the “Instruments of Peace – Geneva” Foundation, which brings musical education to Palestinian and Israeli children. Mr. Arditi will bring welcome added value and raise the profile of UNESCO efforts to promote peace by the propagation of culture. For Switzerland, the nomination of Mr. Arditi represents a vibrant element in reinforcing the very essence of what UNESCO stands for: global peace, understanding, and the rapprochement of cultures.

Goodwill ambassadors are an outstanding group of celebrity advocates who spread the ideals of UNESCO through their name and fame. Through their careers and humanitarian commitment they have made an important contribution towards the objectives and aims in UNESCO's four fields of competence, which are education, culture, science and communication/information.
