Best practice guide for the commodity trading sector

On 28 November 2018, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) launched a Guidance on Implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This best practice guide, produced together with the London-based Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), is the result of a public consultation with NGOs, the private sector and the Geneva cantonal authorities. It is the first document of its kind worldwide.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, and his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, discussed bilateral, multilateral and global issues during a working lunch in Geneva. This was the first extensive bilateral meeting between the two foreign ministers, who until now had only met on the margins of conferences.


Geneva Conference on Afghanistan: Switzerland continues its commitment to stability and development in Afghanistan

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has opened the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan organised by the Afghan government and the United Nations. The goal of the conference is to discuss how to strengthen stability in this South Asian country. Switzerland has been active in Afghanistan since 2002, working to promote human rights, the rule of law, basic education and agricultural development.


International Law Day 2018: FDFA Directorate of International Law launches cybersecurity and digital democracy initiatives

The FDFA Directorate of International Law (DIL) held its annual International Law Day, 'International Law 2.0: Digital Transformation & Cybersecurity', in Geneva on 27 November 2018. The event focused on current and future challenges to international law posed by digitalisation. A group of technical and legal experts was convened with a view to enhancing mutual understanding of the issues. The event also provided a launchpad for two new DIL initiatives focusing on cybersecurity and digital democracy. The event, jointly hosted by the DIL and Geneva Internet Platform, was attended by government officials as well as representatives from international organisations, business and civil society.

President Alain Berset and Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard will attend the next UN climate conference being held in Katowice, Poland, from 3 to 14 December. The international community will gather to draw up guidelines on implementing the Paris climate agreement, to be known as the Paris Rulebook. Switzerland will be pushing for detailed regulations.


Federal Council postpones final decision on Global Compact for Migration until conclusion of parliamentary debates

The Federal Council believes that the United Nations Global Compact for Migration is consistent with Switzerland's interests, as it aims to reduce irregular migration by setting benchmarks for orderly migration practices. However, the Federal Council wishes to postpone its final decision pending conclusion of the parliamentary debates. As a result, Switzerland will not attend the intergovernmental conference for the formal adoption of the global compact to be held in Marrakech on 10 and 11 December 2018.




Federal Council report on gold trading and human rights

At its meeting on 14 November 2018, the Federal Council has presented its gold report in response to a postulate submitted by Parliament. The report takes stock of the Swiss gold sector, reiterates the initiatives and measures already taken and formulates recommendations to ensure that the gold imported into Switzerland has not been produced in violation of human rights.
