The Directorate of Political Affairs is the coordinating unit for Swiss foreign policy and the most senior administrative body for all international representations. It coordinates all the information needed to protect the interests of Swiss citizens abroad.
Contacts and cooperation with all countries in the world are maintained and handled in the bilateral section.
Swiss policy in political, economic and cultural multilateral organizations is coordinated in the multilateral section.
The Directorate of Political Affairs coordinates the Confederation’s foreign policy. Its task is to identify sources of crises and tension. The Directorate prepares the action to be taken and develops strategies for bilateral relations, security, international solidarity and for promoting democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
The head of the Directorate of Political Affairs is the Secretary of State.
