Federal Council postpones final decision on Global Compact for Migration until conclusion of parliamentary debates

The Federal Council believes that the United Nations Global Compact for Migration is consistent with Switzerland's interests, as it aims to reduce irregular migration by setting benchmarks for orderly migration practices. However, the Federal Council wishes to postpone its final decision pending conclusion of the parliamentary debates. As a result, Switzerland will not attend the intergovernmental conference for the formal adoption of the global compact to be held in Marrakech on 10 and 11 December 2018.




Federal Council report on gold trading and human rights

At its meeting on 14 November 2018, the Federal Council has presented its gold report in response to a postulate submitted by Parliament. The report takes stock of the Swiss gold sector, reiterates the initiatives and measures already taken and formulates recommendations to ensure that the gold imported into Switzerland has not been produced in violation of human rights.

National Future Day at the FDFA: Carpets in the Federal Palace, mobile-phone free Federal Council Chamber, and a Federal Councillor with time for visitors

To mark National Future Day 2018, a group of some 80 children and young people spent a day at the workplace of their parents or relatives, getting a glimpse behind the scenes at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. They met Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis who showed them the room where the Federal Council holds its meetings and explained how the Federal Council works. That mobile phones are not allowed in the Federal Council Chamber surprised quite a number of the young visitors.


Gender equality: executive director of UN Women visits Switzerland

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, visited Switzerland from 29 October to 1 November 2018. Ms Mlambo-Ngcuka met with representatives of the Federal Administration, Parliament and civil society to discuss gender equality in Switzerland and worldwide. She also participated in a panel discussion co-organised by the FDFA on 'Women's Empowerment in the World of Work'.


World Bank calls for investment in education and health

Switzerland and Malta reaffirm their ties

Switzerland and Malta maintain good and increasingly intensive relations. This was emphasised by both sides during an official visit to Switzerland by Maltese President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Tuesday, 30 October. In addition to bilateral issues, Malta’s head of state and President Alain Berset discussed European and migration policy issues, as well as developments in the conflict areas of North Africa and the Middle East.


“Mind the gap”: Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis receives British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt in Bern

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met his British counterpart Jeremy Hunt in Bern for bilateral talks. During a working breakfast, the two foreign ministers discussed, among other things, the status of the Brexit negotiations. They also discussed the Federal Council's 'Mind the gap' strategy, which aims to ensure that bilateral relations between Switzerland and the United Kingdom continue as smoothly as possible after the UK's departure from the EU.


Appointment of heads of mission and conferral of the title of ambassador

Staff changes in several Swiss representations and at the FDFA in Bern have been announced for 2018/2019. These changes are part of the periodic transfer rotation and are based on the appointments announced by the Federal Council on 24 October 2018. The appointment of heads of mission abroad becomes effective following approval by the host state.
