Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer and SNB Chairman Thomas Jordan at IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer as Head of the Swiss delegation and Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, will attend the joint Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., from 7 to 9 October 2016. Prior to these meetings, they will also represent Switzerland at the meeting of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors.


Universal Postal Union: second mandate for Deputy Director General Pascal Clivaz

Pascal Clivaz of Switzerland was re-elected to the post of Deputy Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for the 2017-2020 period. This decision was taken by the plenipotentiaries of the Union's member countries at the 26th UPU Congress, which is currently taking place in Istanbul (Turkey).

With this new office, UN Women plans to exert greater influence on intergovernmental decision-making processes and enhance its strategic cooperation with key actors in International Geneva.



Conference on Afghanistan: Switzerland renewed its commitment

At the occasion of the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan, which took place on 4 and 5 October 2016, Switzerland renewed its commitment to a long-term partnership with Afghanistan. As announced by the head of the Swiss delegation, ambassador Thomas Greminger, in his speech, Switzerland will stay engaged in Afghanistan and pursue a commitment of approximately CHF 26 Mio per year until 2020. The Swiss programme focuses on two interconnected domains: inclusive governance and human rights, and sustainable socio-economic development.


The FDFA is launching an online desk for Swiss nationals residing abroad

Since the beginning of October, Swiss nationals residing abroad have had access to various consular services via an online desk on the website of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Swiss nationals residing abroad can use the online desk to enter and modify their data or register with the Register of the Swiss Abroad, notify a change in civil status or address at any time or place. With this innovation the FDFA makes it easier for Swiss nationals residing abroad to contact and stay in touch with Swiss representations abroad.


President welcomes UN Secretary-General on farewell visit

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife Ban Soon-taek paid a farewell visit to Switzerland on Tuesday, 4 October. President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, thanked the outgoing UN Secretary-General for his ten years of dedicated service at the head of the international organisation. They also discussed current challenges and Switzerland’s relations with the UN.


Pascale Baeriswyl appointed FDFA state secretary

The Federal Council appointed Ms Pascale Baeriswyl state secretary and head of the Directorate of Political Affairs of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday. Ms Baeriswyl (48, places of origin Basel and Fribourg) is currently the assistant director of the FDFA's Directorate of International Law (DIL). She will take up her post on 1 December of this year and will succeed Mr Yves Rossier who, after more than four years in this function, has today been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation. The Federal Council has also appointed Ms Krystyna Marty Lang, until recently head of mission in Pristina, as deputy state secretary and deputy head of the Directorate of Political Affairs, with the title of ambassador.



Swiss representation in San Francisco now under one roof with its partners

Today sees the opening of the new home of the consulate general of Switzerland, swissnex San Francisco, the Swiss Business Hub USA and Switzerland Tourism inside a historic warehouse on San Francisco's Pier 17. In cooperation with various federal departments, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA is working to bring all the activities of Swiss foreign policy together under a single roof in one location.


Supporting democratisation in Tunisia: parliamentary delegation on study trip in Switzerland

This week a delegation from the Tunisian parliament has been finding out first-hand about federalism and parliamentary processes in Switzerland. Members of the delegation met with representatives of the Federal Assembly and specialists from the Federal Administration, Parliamentary Services, the canton of Fribourg and its communes. The study trip is part of Switzerland's broader commitment to democratisation in Tunisia.


Signing of peace agreement in Colombia – Switzerland represented by the State Secretary of the FDFA

Yves Rossier, the State Secretary of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will represent Switzerland at the signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC on Monday 26 September 2016. This historic deal should bring an end to a conflict lasting several decades and claiming many victims. It also seeks to bring about lasting peace in this Latin American country.
