State Secretary Yves Rossier is in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory for an official visit from 9 to 13 November 2015. The focus of the political consultations with Israel and the Palestinian National Authority, which take place annually, was on deepening bilateral relations and on recent developments in the Middle East conflict, as well as other issues. Switzerland has been committed for many years to a just and lasting peace based on a negotiated two-state solution.

Switzerland wants to be more actively involved in mediation. This commitment was reaffirmed by Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter in Bern at the annual conference of the Human Security Division of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), who stated that the country could build upon its long-standing tradition as a mediator to this end.

To mark National Future Day 2015, a group of about 75 children and young people spent a day at work with their parents or relatives, looking behind the scenes at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. A highlight of the day was a meeting with Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, who took the youngsters into the Federal Council Chamber, where he answered their numerous questions.

At the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Luxembourg, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter stressed that early action and jointly developed preventive measures were necessary to contain the impact of climate change and the risk of security crises. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) took the opportunity of the biennial Foreign Ministers' Meeting of ASEM to conduct a number of bilateral meetings.

The 31 member countries accepted today Switzerland's candidacy for the chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2017. The Federal Council had supported this candidacy on the proposal of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). During its chairmanship in 2017, the FDFA will continue to work closely on this issue with the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education and with organisations that are active in Switzerland in promoting human rights.

A number of staff changes have been announced for several Swiss representations abroad and at the head office of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 2016. The changes will take place as part of the usual transfer rotation and on the basis of appointments made by the Federal Council. The appointments of heads of mission become effective following approval by the respective host states. The Federal Council thanks those ambassadors entering retirement for their services.

Nach dem Willen des Bundesrats soll die Schweiz am europäischen Fonds für die innere Sicherheit partizipieren. Der Fonds trägt dazu bei, die Effizienz der Kontrollen und damit den Schutz der Schengen-Aussengrenzen zu verbessern. Die Gelder daraus kommen jenen Staaten zugute, die aufgrund ihrer geographischen Lage hohe Kosten für den Schutz der Aussengrenzen und die Erstaufnahme von Flüchtlingen tragen. Der Bundesrat eröffnet heute das Vernehmlassungsverfahren zur entsprechenden Verordnung.

On 5 November, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will attend the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). This year's Foreign Ministers' Meeting will focus on the potential for more extensive cooperation between ASEM members, especially with a view to mitigating the impact of climate change. Since 2012, Switzerland has been a member of the intergovernmental association of 51 states and two organisations which is considered the most important platform for political dialogue, economic cooperation and social exchange between Europe and Asia.

The day before the closure of Expo Milano 2015, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, visited the Swiss Pavilion and the pavilions of neighbouring countries. An average of 11,400 people a day have visited the Swiss Pavilion, whose towers stocked with food products have made the public reflect on their behaviour as consumers. The distinctive feature of the Swiss Pavilion has been the strength of its content. Participating in Expo 2015 has enabled Switzerland to present itself to Italy and to the world as a country which is open, responsible and supportive of others where food is concerned. Expo Milano, exploring the theme of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", has welcomed 21 million visitors in all.

On Friday, 30 October 2015, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Didier Burkhalter, will go to Milan. There he will visit the Expo site for the closing ceremony of the world exhibition. He will also attend the closing ceremony of the third forum for dialogue between Switzerland and Italy, holding bilateral talks with Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni on the fringe of this event.
