Security: the focus of two visits by Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter

On Monday 27 April, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will take part in the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York, at which he will reiterate Switzerland's commitment to the prevention of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and to their elimination. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will then fly directly to Belgrade to attend a meeting of the Troika of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).


Meeting of states on strengthening compliance with international humanitarian law

Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are organising the fourth and final meeting of states in Geneva on 23-24 April 2015 within their joint initiative on strengthening compliance with international humanitarian law. The meeting was opened by the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, and the president of the ICRC, Peter Maurer. Mr Burkhalter emphasised that better compliance with international humanitarian law is not only a matter of respecting the law but also serves moral objectives and strategic interests. The results of the diplomatic process, together with concrete recommendations, will be presented in a concluding report to the 32nd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent taking place in December 2015.


Senior officials from Myanmar in Switzerland for talks and professional training

A delegation of senior officials from Myanmar met Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter in Bern on Wednesday. The officials, who are attending a professional training course, also had discussions with members of parliament and cantonal representatives. The meetings focused on federalism and democracy as well as the reform process in Myanmar, where Switzerland is supporting peace talks and preparations for the parliamentary elections this autumn.



Promotion of Switzerland at three major international events in France, Kazakhstan and South Korea

The Federal Council has decided to promote Switzerland through the presence of a House of Switzerland during the 2016 UEFA European Football Championship in France and the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. Furthermore, the Federal Council has approved participation in the 2017 World Expo in Kazakhstan. The aim is to present Switzerland’s capacity for innovation to a wide international audience and promote Switzerland's interests.


Switzerland to attend IMF and World Bank 2015 Spring Meetings in Washington

Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf as Head of the Swiss delegation, Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann and Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, will attend the joint Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Washington D.C. from 17 to 18 April 2015. Important topics will be the global economic situation and development financing, as well as the consequences of low oil prices for both developing countries and advanced economies.


Switzerland compensates husband of victim of accident caused by a Swiss embassy driver in Washington

The husband of the victim of a road traffic accident, caused on 6 October 2011 by a driver working for the Swiss embassy in Washington while performing his duties, is to receive compensation in the amount of USD 1.725 million. The Swiss Confederation will pay the sum of USD 1.425 million, while civil liability insurance will cover the remaining USD 300,000 of the total.


French President François Hollande on state visit to Switzerland

Basel-Mulhouse airport: statement on Franco-Swiss step towards agreement by end of 2015

Negotiations on Basel-Mulhouse airport are progressing. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius adopted a statement on Tuesday confirming the progress made in recent weeks as part of the Franco-Swiss negotiations. The goal of both parties is to finalise an overall agreement by the end of the year.



Yearly consultation of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission 14th of April 2015 in Berne

Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Berne on the 14th of April 2015 for their yearly consultations. The discussion focused on the current situation in the region and its impact on the activities of the NNSC. The representatives also evaluated the operational tasks of the NNSC including exchange of information and the co-operation with its partners. The NNSC Member States reaffirmed their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula.
