Ebola, Syria and Iraq crises: the Federal Council grants an additional CHF 40 million

The Federal Council wishes to strengthen Switzerland's support for Ebola victims and crisis-hit populations in Syria and Iraq. This Wednesday it decided to grant an additional CHF 40 million, which will be used equally in order to tackle these humanitarian crises. Part of this contribution will be financed by the FDFA, via the SDC. For the remaining CHF 17.5 million, the Federal Council is seeking approval from Parliament for additional funds.


Conference on the Syrian refugee situation: President Burkhalter highlights urgent need for aid

At the conference on the Syrian refugee situation, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, expressed recognition to Syria's neighbouring countries for having taken in around three million people affected by the conflict. He said that Switzerland was prepared to support measures designed to improve the situation of the refugees and that in November Swiss Humanitarian Aid would be sending more cold weather tents to northern Iraq.




Working meeting in Paris and Syria Conference in Berlin: President Burkhalter meets French President Hollande and German Foreign Minister Steinmeier

On Tuesday 28 October 2014, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, is to take part in a conference in Berlin on the Syrian refugee situation, where he will also meet with Germany's Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Two days later, he is scheduled to hold official talks in Paris with the President of France, François Hollande.


Switzerland supports free elections in Tunisia

Switzerland is a major stakeholder with a wide variety of programmes in Tunisia and is providing significant assistance to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), which is supporting the elections on behalf of the international community. In addition, Switzerland is promoting dialogue between the different parties and is sending election observers.

Federal Council approves the Horizon 2020 package

In its meeting today, the Federal Council approved the agreement on Switzerland’s participation in the Horizon 2020 research programme. The agreement covers Switzerland’s partial association to the programme between 15 September 2014 and 31 December 2016. It allows researchers from Switzerland to take full part in selected parts of Horizon 2020 and to apply for the sought-after grants provided by the European Research Council. The agreement provides for Switzerland’s full association to Horizon 2020 between 2017 and 2020, provided a solution can be found to the issue of the free movement of persons.


British Minister of State for Europe, David Lidington, pays visit to Bern

Relations between Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the activities of the OSCE, the situation in Ukraine and policy on the EU took centre-stage at the talks between the British Minister of State for Europe, David Lidington, and the President of the Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, who received his guest on Wednesday for a working lunch at the Von Wattenwyl House.




Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov pays official visit to Bern

Talks centred on Switzerland's activities within the framework of its current OSCE Chairmanship, political developments in the Western Balkans and Ukraine, and bilateral relations.
