Giro del gusto: Milan enjoys a taste of Switzerland

The first stage of the Giro del gusto, which took place in Milan from 30 April to 11 May, was a success. In 12 days, over 60,000 people visited the House of Switzerland, where they encountered various aspects of Switzerland including Swiss design, AOP regional specialities, concerts, Swiss tourism and the Gotthard tunnel.




Switzerland promotes the private sector in the South Caucasus and Ukraine

For more than 20 years, Switzerland has been supporting economic and political reform processes in the South Caucasus and Ukraine with the aim of strengthening democracy and promoting the development of social market economies. At the Annual Conference on Swiss Cooperation with Eastern Europe, which was held on 9 May 2014 in Lucerne, SDC and SECO programme officers and guests from Switzerland and abroad discussed Switzerland's cooperation activities with a focus on private sector development.


President Didier Burkhalter meets the President of the IOC

President Didier Burkhalter met the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, in Lausanne on Friday. Discussions focussed on cooperation between the Swiss authorities and the organisation, whose headquarters have been located in Switzerland since 1915. Mr Burkhalter also took the opportunity to visit the Olympic Museum on the shores of Lake Geneva.



President of the Republic of Singapore, Tony TAN Keng Yam, pays official visit to Bern

On Thursday, 8 May, President Didier Burkhalter received the President of the Republic of Singapore, Tony TAN Keng Yam, on an official visit . The two presidents affirmed their desire to strengthen and enhance relations between Switzerland and the South-East Asian city state. Relations are already extensive, particularly in the fields of business, finance and science.




German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on visit in Bern

Didier Burkhalter, President of the Swiss Confederation and Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) received the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Bern on Friday 2 May 2014. The two ministers took the opportunity to review the crisis in Ukraine, in particular the situation of the abducted military experts.


Greek president Karolos Papoulias in Bern on official visit

On Switzerland's invitation, the president of the Hellenic Republic visited the country on 2 May for the first time since diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Greece began 119 years ago. President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Didier Burkhalter, and President Karolos Papoulias primarily discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and topics concerning European policy. Greece has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since the beginning of the year which will last until the end of June. Against this backdrop, Mr Burkhalter talked about the Federal Council's intended next steps regarding relations between Switzerland and the EU. The vice-president of the Federal Council, Simonetta Sommaruga (FDJP), the Greek deputy foreign minister, Dimitris Kourkoulas, and the Greek minister of tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, also took part in the meeting.


Swiss-made creativity hits Milan

One year exactly before the Expo 2015 kicks off, Switzerland inaugurated today at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan the «Giro del gusto», which will bring to a number of Italian cities a taste of Switzerland, inviting the public to discover the country through its culinary specialities and through a rich programme of activities revolving around culture, science and the economy. The roadshow is intended to showcase Switzerland as a country that is open and creative and show how both Switzerland and Italy rely on their solid, deep-rooted relations for their development. The commissioner-general of the Swiss Confederation to Expo 2015, Dante Martinelli, the mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia and Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2015 and CEO Expo opened the House of Switzerland to the public in the presence of delegations from the city of Milan and from the partner cantons of the Swiss pavilion. The House of Switzerland will form the centrepiece of the Swiss village during the first stage of the «Giro del gusto», from 30 April to 11 May.
