Switzerland wants to increase aid to Syrian civilians

The Federal Council has submitted a request to Parliament to increase the funds available for humanitarian aid to the people of Syria to CHF 5 million. This interim funding is intended to build up the underfinanced programmes of the international organisations currently providing support in the region. The Federal Council notes that the humanitarian situation in Syria is steadily deteriorating and that the affected sections of the Syrian population are urgently in need of more support before winter sets in.


Switzerland supports Palestinian request for change of UN status

Switzerland will vote in favour of the Palestinian request for an enhancement of its status at the United Nations in the vote set to be held at the UN General Assembly. According to the Federal Council, this change of status – from an entity with observer status to that of an observer state – should contribute to a revitalisation of the principle of a two-state solution in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer, head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDCPS), and Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), met NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on 22 November 2012 in Lohn mansion near Bern for an official working visit. Their talks focused on current security policy issues and on Switzerland's and NATO's priorities, especially in the area of mutual cooperation.


Moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty: Switzerland welcomes UN vote

Article - The draft resolution for the United Nations’ biennial call for the establishment of a worldwide moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty was approved on Monday by 110 States. Switzerland welcomes this result. Human rights issues are an abiding concern in Switzerland’s foreign policy, and the fight to abolish capital punishment is a matter of the highest priority in Switzerland’s human rights policy.

Switzerland provides Syrian refugees in Turkey with support

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA is providing the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with support to the amount of CHF 500,000 from the funds of Swiss Humanitarian Aid to help Syrian refugees in Turkey. The money will be used to purchase heaters, stoves, winter clothes and other items, all of which should help to make life in the refugee camps more bearable in the face of the coming winter. In addition, Switzerland is also sending a Humanitarian Aid expert to assist the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in the region.


Negotiations between Switzerland and the EU on Swiss participation in the IT Agency

In Brussels today Switzerland's participation in the European Agency for the operational management of information systems on a large scale (IT Agency) was discussed in a round of negotiations. International Geneva: the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Geneva sign security services agreement

Monday, 19 November 2012 - The Swiss Confederation, represented by the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, and the Canton of Geneva, represented by Cantonal Councillor Pierre Maudet, today signed a security services agreement for the years 2013-2016 designed to strengthen security in International Geneva. This contribution by the Confederation (FDFA) to the support of the Groupe diplomatique of the Geneva Police Department was decided upon in August of this year by the Federal Council.

Official visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

On 15 November 2012, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, received the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Bernerhof in Bern for an official working visit. Their talks centred on bilateral issues and questions regarding the Middle East conflict, as well as on current multilateral issues. Following the working meeting with Federal Councillor Burkhalter, President Abbas paid a courtesy call on the President of the Swiss Confederation, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf. Afterwards, President Abbas met with the Presidents of the two chambers of parliament.
