Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons Switzerland – EU: Invocation of the Safeguard Clause with respect to the EU-8 States

At its meeting today, the Federal Council has decided to invoke the safeguard clause provided for in the Agreement between Switzerland and the EU on the free movement of persons, applying it to the EU-8 Member States. As of 1 May 2012, category B residence permits granted to citizens of these countries will be subject to quotas. Furthermore, the Federal Council has decided to examine additional measures in the domain of accompanying measures and on the issue of integration.


Yearly consultations of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Seoul

Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Seoul on the 18th and 19th of April 2012 for their yearly consultations. Discussions focused on current tasks of the NNSC and recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. The NNSC Member States reasserted their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula.


IMF and World Bank Group 2012 Spring Meetings

At the 2012 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the ministerial steering committee of the IMF will consider an extraordinary increase in IMF resources. Switzerland is prepared to make a substantial contribution to these measures designed to stabilise the financial system within the scope of a concerted action by important creditor countries. The other topics covered at the Spring Meetings include the state of the global economy, the surveillance work of the IMF and its governance. The main topics for the Development Committee are the use of the private sector as an instrument for development and the need for social safety nets.


Switzerland to participate in the advance team of the UN mission to Syria

On Wednesday, the Federal Council decided to send up to six members of the Swiss Armed Forces to take part in the advance team of the UN mission to report on a cessation of violence in Syria. They will be deployed as unarmed military observers. This decision was taken following a request from the UN.


The Prosecutor designate of the International Criminal Court in Bern

Today, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), has received for a working visit the recently designated prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mrs Fatou Bensouda. The meeting offered the opportunity to discuss the role of the ICC, the priorities of the new Prosecutor and Switzerland’s contribution to the success of the ICC. Later, Mrs Bensouda met Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FPJP). Their discussion focused on cooperation.





Strengthening Geneva as a Hub for Environmental Concerns

Switzerland has announced its candidacy as host State for the permanent Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). On April 12th it submitted its offer to domicile the Fund in Geneva. At the same time, Switzerland is running for a seat on the GCF’s Executive Board. This would make it possible to create synergies as various organizations active in the domain of the environment are already represented in Geneva.



Federal government demining strategy, 2012 to 2015

The federal government has defined the strategy for its commitment to humanitarian demining for the period from 2012 to 2015. An annual amount of around 16 million Swiss francs is to be spent for projects and the secondment of experts in the fight against landmines, cluster bombs and other explosive remnants of war.


Official working visit to Bern by Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva

On 3 April 2012, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the new Director-General of the United Nations office in Geneva, met Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, for official talks in Bern. They signed an agreement on Switzerland's financial contribution to the renovation of the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Following the meeting, Director-General Tokayev will pay a courtesy visit to the President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.
