Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visits Estonia to mark double anniversary and discuss digitalisation

Following the first leg of his visit to the Baltic States in Latvia, today Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, travelled to Estonia where he met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Eva-Maria Liimets and Parliamentary Speaker Jüri Ratas. Their talks focused on digitalisation, European policy and Switzerland's candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council in the period 2023–24. Mr Cassis also visited the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis starts Baltic tour with official visit to Latvia

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has begun his trip to the Baltic States with an official visit to Latvia. This year, Switzerland is celebrating a double anniversary with all three Baltic countries: the centenary of their independence and 30 years since the resumption of diplomatic relations following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mr Cassis was received in Riga on 5 July by Latvian President Egils Levits, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and Parliamentary Speaker Ināra Mūrniece. Talks focused on European policy. Latvia is the first stop on Mr Cassis' trip to the region. He will then pay an official visit to Estonia followed by Lithuania, where he will also take part in the Ukraine Reform Conference.


Successful bug bounty pilot project in Federal Administration

From 10 to 21 May 2021, the National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) conducted a bug bounty pilot project in collaboration with Bug Bounty Switzerland GmbH, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and Parliamentary Services (PS). The project was very successful and the lessons learned are to be incorporated into the implementation of further bug bounty programmes in the Federal Administration.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to travel to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and take part in Ukraine Reform Conference in Vilnius

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will make an official visit to the Baltic states from 4 to 8 July 2021. He will travel to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. He will also participate in the Ukraine Reform Conference in Vilnius on 7 and 8 July. The talks will focus on European policy, bilateral cooperation and the challenges currently facing the international community. Mr Cassis is attending the Reform Conference in preparation for Switzerland's upcoming chairmanship in 2022.


Investments and innovative approaches in rural areas: Switzerland increases contribution to International Fund for Agricultural Development

The Federal Council is committed to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger in rural areas. At its meeting on 30 June 2021, it decided to renew and increase its contribution to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). With a contribution of CHF 47 million, Switzerland is supporting IFAD's ambition to double its impact by 2030 by enabling 74 million people living in rural areas to raise their incomes by at least 20%. The focus will be on women and young people.


Coronavirus: Switzerland passes four million doses of vaccine on to COVAX

At its meeting on 30 June 2021, the Swiss Federal Council decided to transfer to the COVAX Facility a large part of the 5.4 million or so doses of AstraZeneca vaccine that have been ordered. Switzerland is thus able to make a substantial contribution to global efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. COVAX is an initiative to ensure equal and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines across the world. Given the very uneven global distribution of vaccine doses, the pandemic is expected to continue for some considerable time across the world.


2021 Joint Statement by Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission Member States

Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Geneva on June 29-30, 2021 for their annual consultations. The 2020 consultations had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Discussions focused on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and its impact on the activities of the NNSC. The representatives also evaluated the operational tasks of the NNSC and reaffirmed their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, the NNSC Member States exchanged views with UN staff and representatives of several Geneva-based institutions over the situation on the Korean Peninsula and on the work of NNSC.


More coordinated emergency humanitarian action

Finding new ways to respond to challenges exacerbated by COVID-19. This was one of the key issues discussed at the humanitarian affairs segment (HAS) of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which was held in Geneva from 23 to 25 June 2021 and was chaired by Switzerland. A resolution to strengthen coordination of humanitarian aid was adopted, sending an important political signal.


The pop-up House of Switzerland: the new national marketing tool – coming to Stuttgart, Milan and New York

For the first time, Switzerland is launching a pop-up House of Switzerland and with it a new national marketing tool. This temporary networking and communication platform, organised by Presence Switzerland in cooperation with its partners Switzerland Tourism and Switzerland Global Enterprise, raises Switzerland's visibility in export markets, fostering relations and new opportunities for collaboration. The first Swiss pop-up will be unveiled in Stuttgart on 1 July 2021. In terms of trade, Baden-Württemberg is one of Switzerland's most important neighbouring regions.



Coronavirus: Federal Council to take further, wide-ranging reopening step and to relax rules on entering Switzerland

The measures in place to contain the coronavirus will be eased and simplified significantly from Saturday, 26 June. The requirements to work from home and to wear masks outdoors, for example, will be lifted. Furthermore, restaurants will again be allowed to seat as many people together as they wish, and large-scale events with COVID certificates will be allowed to take place without restrictions on capacity or the number of people present. This reopening step therefore goes further than proposed in the consultation. At its meeting on 23 June, the Federal Council also decided to relax rules on entering the country. The health-related measures at the border will now focus on those arriving from countries with variants of the virus that give rise to concern.


Switzerland takes part in the second international Berlin Conference on Libya

On 23 June 2021, the members of the Berlin group convened for the second international Berlin Conference on Libya, hosted by Germany and the United Nations. As a participating member, Switzerland was represented at the conference by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis. In promoting peace and acting as a host state, Switzerland supports a political solution in Libya.
