Bilateral relations Switzerland–El Salvador

Relations between Switzerland and El Salvador are good but not particularly intensive.  The Swiss development cooperation programme was concluded in 2008.

Key aspects of diplomatic relations

History of bilateral relations

In 1913, Switzerland opened its first consulate in San Salvador, which was upgraded to a consulate general in 1959 and to an embassy in 1968.  In 1979, Switzerland closed its embassy following the murder of the chargé d’affaires.  A consular agency was opened in 1982, which was transformed into an honorary consulate general in 1997.  Since this date bilateral relations have been handled by the Swiss Honorary Consulate General in San Salvador and by the Swiss Embassy in San José.
