Bern, Press releases, 07.10.2015

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is concerned about the escalation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians over the past few weeks. The FDFA believes that the violence and provocation on both sides is undermining efforts to build trust and engender hope for peace.

In view of the latest events, Switzerland calls on all the parties involved to refrain from violence, provocation and any other action which may intensify the already extremely tense situation. Switzerland would like to express its sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the latest victims of the Middle East conflict and continues to believe that a negotiated two-state solution is the key to just and lasting peace in the region. Switzerland calls on Israelis and Palestinians to observe their obligations under international law and to work together to create peace and security for the local populations. To this end they should work with the international community towards resuming peace negotiations.

Switzerland will continue its commitment in the region, providing humanitarian aid and supporting development programmes and measures to uphold international law, promote peace and protect the civilian population. It encourages dialogue between all the players involved and advocates the resumption of clearly structured peace negotiations.
