Switzerland and El Salvador have concluded agreements mainly on the promotion and protection of investments and on development cooperation.
The volume of trade between Switzerland and El Salvador is low. In 2016, Switzerland imported goods – primarily textiles and machines – worth CHF 1.93 million from El Salvador. Exports to El Salvador in 2016 totalled CHF 13.39 billion, mostly machines, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Researchers and artists from El Salvador can apply to the State Secretariat for Education Research and Innovation (SERI) for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

El Salvador ceased to be a priority country for the SDC in 2008. Following the tropical storm 12E in October 2011, Swiss Humanitarian Aid (SHA) provided aid amounting to CHF 300,000 to the Bajo Rio Lempa region, of which CHF 165,000 was provided by the SHA (of the SDC) and CHF 135,000 by Swiss NGOs.

History of bilateral relations
In 1913, Switzerland opened its first consulate in San Salvador, which was upgraded to a consulate general in 1959 and to an embassy in 1968. In 1979, Switzerland closed its embassy following the murder of the chargé d’affaires. A consular agency was opened in 1982, which was transformed into an honorary consulate general in 1997. Since this date bilateral relations have been handled by the Swiss Honorary Consulate General in San Salvador and by the Swiss Embassy in San José.
