Press releases, 09.04.2025

At its meeting on 9 April 2025, the Federal Council approved a contribution of CHF 31.8 million to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and CHF 2 million to the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), thereby reaffirming Switzerland's support for sustainable development, the fight against poverty and multilateralism. The UNDP and UNCDF play a key role in implementing the 2030 Agenda, supporting governments in their efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These contributions are part of Switzerland's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development, the fight against poverty and good governance at the global level. In an international context racked by crises and uncertainty, these contributions from Switzerland are a clear signal in favour of long-term international cooperation. This support also highlights the importance of the UNDP and the United Nations system, which has its second largest headquarters in Geneva, in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda. The UNDP plays a key role in the implementation of the SDGs. It is active in 170 countries and focuses on key issues such as poverty reduction, democratic governance, strengthening sustainable finance, energy transition and climate resilience.

A strategic contribution from Switzerland

Switzerland is a long-standing UNDP donor. The UNDP's activities are aligned with the strategic priorities of Switzerland’s international cooperation for 2025–28 and its objectives in terms of human development, peace, the environment and governance. Particular attention will be paid to the role of the UNDP in strengthening the resilience of populations and institutions in the face of crises. The contribution to the UNCDF, which is institutionally linked to the UNDP, aims to ensure that financial services and investment capital reach the least developed countries and the most marginalised populations.

Funding tailored to international priorities

Switzerland's core contributions to the UNDP and the UNCDF will be included in the guarantee credit for the funding of international cooperation for 2025–28, approved by Parliament as part of the Swiss international cooperation strategy for the next four years. The core contributions for 2024 amounted to CHF 47.28 million. For 2025, the contributions of CHF 33.8 million – although reduced compared to the previous cycle due to federal budget constraints – remain an important lever for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and for Switzerland's influence within multilateral bodies.
