Human rights dialogue between Switzerland and Tajikistan

The first round of the Human Rights Dialogue between Switzerland and Tajikistan took place on 22 June 2010 in Dushanbe. The dialogue was officially launched by Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey during her working visit to Central Asia in October 2009. The talks focused on a discussion of a number of human rights themes and the possibility of deepening the dialogue through specific projects.

Official visit by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri

The President of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA), Doris Leuthard, and the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Micheline Calmy-Rey, today received the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, in Bern. The meetings covered bilateral relations and international issues such as the situation in the Southern Caucasus. At the end of the meeting with President Leuthard, a double taxation agreement was signed between the two countries.


Official visit by Mirko Cvetkovic, Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia

Doris Leuthard, President of the Swiss Confederation, today received the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Mirko Cvetkovic at the Lohn Residence at Kehrsatz. The meetings focussed on bilateral relations, cooperation within the international financial institutions and the situation in the western Balkans.


Max Göldi returns to Switzerland

Swiss citizen Max Göldi, who has been detained in Libya for almost two years and was released from prison in Tripolis on 10 June 2010 after four months’ imprisonment, returned to Switzerland last night. He was flown out of Libya late on Sunday evening. “We are relieved and share in the joy of Max Göldi and his family”, emphasized Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA. At the same time, she thanked Spain and Germany for their services as mediators.


Joseph Deiss elected President of the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly

Today in New York, the United Nations General Assembly has elected by acclamation Joseph Deiss to the office of President of the 65th Session of the General Assembly. The President of the Swiss Confederation, Doris Leuthard, has congratulated Joseph Deiss in writing on behalf of the Federal Council, welcoming the election as a great honour for Switzerland. Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, speaking in New York, regards the election as a strong signal of the international community’s recognition of Switzerland’s commitment to the United Nations.


Switzerland supports Hungary’s fight against the serious threat of floods

Hungary is getting prepared to face a major risk of flooding in the north of the country. The Danube and the Tisza are threatening to overflow their banks towards the middle of next week. To cope with this threat, the Hungarian government has requested the aid of its European partners. Switzerland will deliver 500,000 bags of sand and dispatch to the site three experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit.


Federal Council decides in favour of “Houses of Switzerland” for the Olympic Games 2012 in London and 2014 in Sochi

Following the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, the Swiss Confederation will again be using future Olympic Games as platforms for its communication abroad. The Federal Council decided today that Switzerland will be represented at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London and at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi with a “House of Switzerland”.
