Hintergrund The Palestinian society is generally young, with 1.16 million youth aged 18-29 (22% of total population as of 2021). Despite political and economic challenges, education levels remain high among youth, with 18% having a BA degree or higher. Nevertheless, unemployment rates remain high and even increased with the COVID-19 pandemic with youth being hit the hardest. In 2021, Unemployment was 64% among young females and 33% among young males. Also, the highest rates of unemployment among the youth aged 18-29 years were recorded among graduates. However, certain sectors lack the needed skilled labor, mainly agriculture and light manufacturing. The high unemployment rates among educated youth is a result of host of variables; mainly the disparity between the output of academia and requirements of the industry, the oversaturation of the public sector, near saturation of the private sector, and the economy’s inability to create jobs at the same pace academic institutions are producing graduates. The stark difference between male and female unemployment rates is indicative of structural and systemic gender barriers facing young females, contributing to low participation in the work force.
Ziele Economic perspectives for Palestinian youth, women, and PwD are enhanced through upskilling and promoting job creation, entrepreneurship and innovative business ideas.
