Nepal, SET, Emergency Response Earthquake

An earthquake of the magnitude of 7.8 hit Nepal and neighbouring countries in the early daylight hours of 25th April 2015. The result has been substantial infrastructural damage across 30 out of 75 Nepali districts and a casualty toll rising to 1’900 death by the 26the April 2015.

In face of the devastating impact, the Nepali authorities issued an appeal for international assistance.

Contribution to an effective emergency response to the benefit of Nepali populations effected by the earthquake and support to national and local authorities as well as other humanitarian actors in their efforts to overcome the crisis. Focus areas will foreseeably consist of shelter, potable water and medical assistance.

Populations in areas where infrastructural damage is particularly evident, i.e. Central Highlands and Kathmandu Valley

• Assessment of the most urgent humanitarian needs, foreseeably in the sectors shelter, water and medicine.
• Evaluation of options which make a concrete contribution to effective emergency response and early recovery, be these direct actions or contributions to multilateral organisations, NGOs or secondments
• Identification and commencement of emergency response in areas hit by infrastructural damage
• Support to the Swiss Embassy in Kathmandu
• Evaluation and planning of a continuation or expansion of the actions beyond the SET-deployment.

Principaux résultats antérieurs:  

Swiss Humanitarian Aid has been in talks with the Swiss Embassy in Nepal to support DRR mainstreaming.

Ad hoc arrangements with organisations engaged  in emergency response, early recovery and rehabilitation

Coordination with Embassy, Helvetas, OCHA UN (incl. WASH, Health, Shelter Clusters), ICRC, Nepali and Swiss Red Cross and national disaster response mechanisms
