UNHCR, Protection Secondment, Yangon
The conflict in Kachin State broke out in mid-2011 and has left approximately 100,000 people displaced across Kachin and northern Shan States to date. UNHCR operates as part of the inter-agency humanitarian response mechanism in these areas; its main interventions include protection monitoring and support, shelter construction and renovation, support to camp management, and inter-agency coordination on behalf of the Cluster/Sector which includes the information management with the different stakeholders.

Hintergrund |
Most of the active non-state actors (NSAs) in Kachin and northern Shan States pulled out of the Nation-wide Cease Fire Agreement shortly before it was concluded in October 2015. The new, democratically elected government is re-formulating its engagement within the peace process at large. The peace talks with the NSAs in Kachin and Shan States are being taken up again, it is however expected that low-intensity fighting will continue during 2016 and 2017. |
Ziele |
Strengthen the importance of Protection in the ongoing humanitarian response as well as transition to early recovery engagement and development activities. |
Zielgruppen |
|
Mittelfristige Wirkungen |
Strengthen the protection environment for individuals at risk and the displaced population as well as ensuring the response capacity (and preparedness) to meet basic humanitarian needs across Kachin and northern Shan States. |
Resultate |
Erwartete Resultate: Resultate von früheren Phasen: Since 2011 SDC has been seconding protection experts to UNHCR, WFP and UNICEF in the South East, Kachin / Northern Shan States and in Yangon. The secondments, especially in non-state actor controlled areas, are a clear asset regarding access to a humanitarian hotspot, for Protection related information management, coordination of activities and networking. The engagement is in line with the Swiss Protection Strategy in Myanmar. |
