Kocani Waste Water Treatment Project
The project will finance the building of a waste water treatment plant in the city of Kocani. It will improve the water quality of one of the main rivers in the country. The project contributes to the sustainable development of the Kocani region through protection of the natural resources. This will promote the economic development of the region.

Hintergrund |
Macedonia includes three main hydro graphic catchment areas: the Vardar river, the Crni Drim and the Strumica area. The Bregalnica Rriver Basin is part of the Vardar river catchment area, comprising twelve municipalities with a total population of over 200?000 people. The river drains an area of 4?300 km2, and has an important function as drainage for wastewater and as water source for irrigation. In Berovo, SECO financed the first waste water treatment plant in the river basin. Following the flow of the river downstream, the next waste water treatment plant should be therefore located in the city of Kocani. |
Ziele |
The project will assist the Macedonian authorities in improving the water quality of one of the main rivers in the country while meet the requirements of the national and European legislation for water resource management. The project therefore contributes to the sustainable development of the Kocani region through the protection of its natural resources. This should promote the economic development of the region such as the industrial development, agriculture and tourism. |
Mittelfristige Wirkungen |
The project will help protect the river Bregalnica from pollution by improving the water quality of the river. The wastewater will be treated and managed in agreement with the new Macedonian legislation and with European standards. The Public Utility will be strengthened. Its staff will be trained in order to sustainably operate the treatment plant. |

Erwartete Resultate: Infrastructure Investments 1) Construction of the waste water treatment plant. 2) Construction of a main collector from the city to the location of the waste water treatment plant. 3) Construction of a separate sewage system in Kocani for storm water drainage. 4) Purchase of equipment for operation and maintenance the sewage system. 5) Technical consultancy services during project implementation. Institutional support and policy dialogue 6) Corporate development measures at the Public Utility "Vodovo". 7) Policy dialogue at national level. |
