Aquafund LatAm and Caribbean, Phase III

LAC still faces some major challenges to bring the 6th UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) into reality. SDG 6 calls for a holistic effort to ensure water and sanitation for all and improve quality of services. As a response to these challenges, taking into account the country needs, international evidence, the good practices identified and the lessons learned of past interventions, the IDB has recently developed the Water and Sanitation Sector Framework that will guide the work of the Bank in the Region over the next three years (2018-2020). The AquaFund is IDB's main financing mechanism to support investments in the sector.

AquaFund aims to support the LAC countries in achieving universal sustainable access to high-quality water and sanitation (W&S) services. For doing so, the AquaFund approves yearly an estimated workplan of US12 million in different types of technical coperation projects: (i) Operational Support to support the preparation of water and sanitation investments- (ii) Client support to build the capacities of utilities, governments and communities- (iii) Research and Dissemination to contribute to the sector’s knowledge and exchange of best practices- (iv) Pilot Projects to pilot innovative strategies and methodologies.

Through the SECO contribution general support to the activities of the AquaFund shall be combined with a focus on Peru and Colombia, to improve their urban water, sanitation and solid waste management services and reduce the vulnerability to flooding by enhancing the drainage services.

Resultate von früheren Phasen:  

A review of the previous contribution period (2011-2017) confirmed that AquaFund is a relevant instrument for IDB and national governments to work towards achieving the MDGs and SDGs and that it responds to the needs of the region in the water and sanitation sector. Results include: AquaFund influenced IDB loans for USD 5.8 billion and attracted grants from donors for 33 million USD. It also leveraged co-financing from local counterparts and third parties for USD 51 million- AquaFund operational support and investment grants projects enabled IDB to prepare and finance water and sanitation loans that will reach more than 5.8 million households- The constructive dialogue between Switzerland (SDC, SECO) and IDB has positively influenced the governance of the fund and today’s monitoring and reporting practices- Knowledge products such as Aquarating and Hidro-BID were successfully applied in SECO water and sanitation operations in Peru and Colombia.
